Construction delay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd value?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially catastrophic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson wasn&#39;t merely collateral.<\/p>\n<p>It might contain a hidden environmental liability.<\/p>\n<p>Richard could know.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had always known.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He listened, asked two questions, then ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found Lawson.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart jumped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot him physically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He corrected himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharlotte airport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaron too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Lawson fly?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDestination?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Mercer looked at Dad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLawson made a call before leaving Asheville.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth Vale Capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristmas morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don&#39;t have the recording yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn said, \u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer looked at the Henderson map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorth Vale\u2019s internal note says Lawson advised them the collateral value might soon change materially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told them about contamination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would they keep the loan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause a distressed property can still be useful if someone knows more than everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExplain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf North Vale forecloses, they acquire the collateral. If Richard has arranged a buyer\u2014or is the buyer through another entity\u2014the fraudulent loan becomes a mechanism for transferring the land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not extortion.<\/p>\n<p>Acquisition.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron and Richard hadn&#39;t simply borrowed against my land.<\/p>\n<p>They were trying to force it out of Holt Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Parcel Seven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Richard want contaminated land?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Walter always said there was something underneath that quarry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t thought about this in thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat the quarry wasn&#39;t valuable because of the stone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was valuable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI genuinely don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at the old map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter used to say the family had been sitting on a fortune and nobody understood it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel began searching geological records.<\/p>\n<p>I watched lines of data populate.<\/p>\n<p>Old mineral surveys.<\/p>\n<p>Industrial reports.<\/p>\n<p>Extraction permits.<\/p>\n<p>Then one document appeared from 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Lawson Aggregate exploratory boring permit.<\/p>\n<p>Purpose: subsurface mineral assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Results sealed as proprietary.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat could mean nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr Richard isn&#39;t trying to reclaim worthless contaminated land.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened a newer state geological survey.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He enlarged the map.<\/p>\n<p>A mineral-bearing formation ran directly beneath the old quarry.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t understand the technical label.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLithium-bearing pegmatite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>Lithium.<\/p>\n<p>The material used in batteries.<\/p>\n<p>A resource whose value had changed dramatically since Walter Lawson\u2019s era.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Parcel Seven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Richard know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Walter knew there was something under that quarry, Richard probably knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Henderson isn&#39;t the prize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She pointed to the center of the map.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercer\u2019s phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>He checked the message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have Lawson\u2019s flight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did he go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDenver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy Denver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel searched Blue Heron Strategic\u2019s recent corporate filings.<\/p>\n<p>A newly added investor appeared.<\/p>\n<p>A Colorado mineral-development company.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the name.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had already found someone interested in what lay beneath the land.<\/p>\n<p>The fraudulent loan.<\/p>\n<p>The forged ownership records.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden environmental history.<\/p>\n<p>The missing originals.<\/p>\n<p>All of it pointed toward the same objective.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron and Lawson hadn&#39;t spent six years preparing to destroy Holt Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>They had spent six years preparing to take the one property Richard believed his family had lost twice.<\/p>\n<p>And if the geological records were right, Parcel Seven might be worth far more than the entire Henderson development we had planned around it.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=32579\">Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Mineral Report Made Parcel Seven Look Like a Fortune, Until Evelyn Found the Clause That Could Leave Holt Ridge With Nothing<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dad refused to explain over the phone.
