It doesn&#39;t. Sometimes patience is simply the time it takes to gather enough evidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me the folder,\u201d Bridget said.<\/p>\n<p>I held it against my side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked.<\/p>\n<p>The word seemed to surprise her more than anger would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t understand what&#39;s in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took a step forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re making a serious mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months ago, you told your sister I couldn&#39;t read small print anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The change in her face was tiny.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis missed it.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#39;t.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Not embarrassment.<\/p>\n<p>Not remorse.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were eavesdropping?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was walking down the hallway of my own home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked away.<\/p>\n<p>My home.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Walter and I had spent nearly half a century there. Curtis had learned to ride a bicycle on the driveway. I had held Walter&#39;s hand through the final night of his life in the room Bridget later suggested converting into an office.<\/p>\n<p>Now this woman was treating my presence as a temporary inconvenience.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget lifted her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t do this right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d Curtis asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her car door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means I&#39;m going somewhere we can sort out the account problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew before she said anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then she got into the SUV.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She slammed the door.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicle backed out fast enough to bump over the edge of the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>My silver chest remained behind.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis watched her disappear.<\/p>\n<p>Then he turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, tell me everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because anything was funny.<\/p>\n<p>Because I had tried.<\/p>\n<p>For months, I had tried.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I said Bridget was opening my mail, what did you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat she was trying to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I said she was answering doctors for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she was worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I said I didn&#39;t want to discuss assisted living?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said she kept bringing it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat we should keep our options open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not cruelty.<\/p>\n<p>Something more ordinary and, in its own way, more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Convenience.<\/p>\n<p>Believing Bridget had been easier than listening to me.<\/p>\n<p>I reached into my purse and removed my notebook.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote down every time your wife opened my mail without permission. Every time she moved financial documents. Every time she told someone I was confused. Every time she asked about my will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;ve been documenting her for six months?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve been protecting myself for six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you didn&#39;t tell me this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whenever I told you one thing, you explained it away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had no answer.<\/p>\n<p>I handed him copies of my medical evaluation and the protections my attorney had arranged.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis read them slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went through a competency examination?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of Bridget?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause someone was preparing to claim I could no longer manage my own affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I tapped the folder.<\/p>\n<p>He found the document himself.<\/p>\n<p>The signature at the bottom was Bridget&#39;s.<\/p>\n<p>The date was months earlier than the period when she claimed she had only recently begun \u201chelping\u201d me with paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis sat down heavily on the porch step.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not comfort him.<\/p>\n<p>Some truths need room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me you were getting worse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy eyesight is getting worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you forgot conversations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forget where I put my glasses sometimes. So do you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>Then his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget.<\/p>\n<p>He answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean you&#39;re at the bank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the handle of my walker.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis turned away from me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Don&#39;t do anything until I get there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she&#39;s trying to straighten out a misunderstanding with your account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat misunderstanding?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#39;t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she had authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe doesn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first time he said it without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake me to the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, maybe I should go first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis could get ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt already is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at my walker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop trying to handle me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed harder than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before we left, I carried my mother&#39;s silver chest inside.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis offered to help.<\/p>\n<p>I refused.<\/p>\n<p>It was heavier than I remembered. My hip complained with every step, but I carried it to the dining room myself.<\/p>\n<p>The empty space where it had stood looked like a missing tooth.<\/p>\n<p>I set the chest down.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were photographs, letters and pieces of family history Bridget apparently considered inventory.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stood behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know she took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders loosened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn&#39;t mean you&#39;re innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They tightened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the drive to the bank, neither of us spoke much.<\/p>\n<p>At a red light, Curtis finally said, \u201cDo you think she was actually going to sell the house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou sound certain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gripped the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Fairview?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me you&#39;d asked about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The light changed.<\/p>\n<p>He drove another block.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t read it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trusted my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou trusted her with my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I looked out the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not saying that to punish you. I need you to understand the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the time we reached the bank, Curtis looked ten years older.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, the manager, had known Walter and me for years. When he saw me enter, he stood immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello, Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes shifted to Curtis.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward an office near the windows.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget was already sitting inside.<\/p>\n<p>She wore the expression I knew best.<\/p>\n<p>Concerned daughter-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>Responsible caretaker.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who had only been trying to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor,\u201d she said softly when we entered. \u201cI&#39;m glad you came.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t speak to me as though we&#39;re on the same side of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas closed the office door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we need to clarify exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said. \u201cWe do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He placed several documents on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridget contacted us regarding changes to account access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe requested authority to manage certain financial matters on your mother&#39;s behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to prevent problems,\u201d Bridget said.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem was you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved toward it.<\/p>\n<p>I began reading dates.<\/p>\n<p>Mail opened.<\/p>\n<p>Bank statements removed.<\/p>\n<p>Calls made on my behalf.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about my will.<\/p>\n<p>Comments about Fairview.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas listened without interruption.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis did too.<\/p>\n<p>Bridget&#39;s expression hardened with every entry.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, she said, \u201cShe&#39;s making ordinary caregiving sound sinister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never appointed you my caregiver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed rides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou turned rides to the doctor into authority over my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas pulled another set of papers from the file.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an additional matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curtis looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA request affecting account access was submitted for review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned the papers toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stared at Bridget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you submit these?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCurtis\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore or after you got control?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her composure cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to protect our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hand struck the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe cannot live alone forever!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became still.<\/p>\n<p>I studied Bridget&#39;s face.<\/p>\n<p>At last, the concern was gone.<\/p>\n<p>What remained was resentment.<\/p>\n<p>I closed my notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bridget stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis did too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot live alone forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something almost like relief appeared in her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Then I finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I can live without you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas quietly gathered the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis stood.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at his wife for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then he moved his chair away from hers.<\/p>\n<p>It was only a few inches.<\/p>\n<p>But we all understood what those inches meant.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=32570\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: At the Bank Bridget\u2019s Story Collapsed, and Curtis Had to Decide Whether He Would Finally Believe His Mother<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bridget expected Curtis to defend her.
