No.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel took the phone back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got a message from someone claiming to be Thomas Bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you obeyed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe sent me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recording.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoing what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalking to Adrian Cole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never spoke to Adrian the night he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what recording?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s voice sounded shaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo days earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I searched memory and found nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did we discuss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hale case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat narrows very little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told you he had proof someone inside the government was protecting Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cold thread moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told him not to trust anyone until he spoke with you directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked who he could trust if something happened to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had been a junior prosecutor then.<\/p>\n<p>Smart.<\/p>\n<p>Idealistic.<\/p>\n<p>Untested.<\/p>\n<p>I did not remember doing it.<\/p>\n<p>But I could imagine it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is that relevant now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Bell says Adrian left something for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal annex garage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took Chloe there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe insisted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Instead: \u201cTurn around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleanor\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever is waiting there has survived eleven years. It can survive another hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says it won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Elliot Crane knows where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That changed little.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurn around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Chloe spoke in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, there\u2019s a car behind us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack SUV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince the interstate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz motioned to agents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel, do not go to the annex,\u201d she said. \u201cStay on the main road. Units are coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The line crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Chloe shouted.<\/p>\n<p>Tires screamed.<\/p>\n<p>The call dropped.<\/p>\n<p>I stood frozen for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLocation!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An agent called coordinates.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz ran.<\/p>\n<p>I followed until she turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you will help nobody by entering an active pursuit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, I listened.<\/p>\n<p>Barely.<\/p>\n<p>I stood in the hallway while radio traffic turned into fragments.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle collision.<\/p>\n<p>No rollover.<\/p>\n<p>Suspect SUV continuing.<\/p>\n<p>State units intercepting.<\/p>\n<p>Two occupants in Daniel\u2019s car conscious.<\/p>\n<p>My knees almost gave.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>Ten minutes later, Ortiz returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe is okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the wall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMinor injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SUV tried to force them off the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone see the driver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are they?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmbulance checking them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time Ortiz did not stop me.<\/p>\n<p>At the roadside, Chloe sat wrapped in a blanket for the second time in less than a week.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me and winced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are never making transportation decisions again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood beside the damaged sedan with blood at his temple.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to strike him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I hugged him.<\/p>\n<p>Then stepped back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou absolute idiot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Bell send you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached into his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed her a small memory card sealed inside a plastic case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was taped beneath my office desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAudio and a note.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat note?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He recited it.<\/p>\n<p>DANIEL \u2014 IF ELEANOR EVER ASKS ABOUT ADRIAN, TAKE HER TO THE ANNEX LOCKER. DO NOT TRUST CRANE.<\/p>\n<p>Signed A.C.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Cole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you find it before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI replaced the desk years ago. Facilities stored the old one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Bell told you to inspect it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did Bell know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz asked, \u201cWhat locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame garage. Lower level. Locker 19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel\u2019s voice returned in memory.<\/p>\n<p>Adrian made backups.<\/p>\n<p>Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>Layers.<\/p>\n<p>At the annex, federal teams secured the garage before anyone approached locker 19.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was not a tape.<\/p>\n<p>Not a ledger.<\/p>\n<p>A file folder.<\/p>\n<p>One photograph.<\/p>\n<p>One key.<\/p>\n<p>And a handwritten transcript.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Adrian Cole entering a car.<\/p>\n<p>The driver\u2019s face was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Not Edward Crane.<\/p>\n<p>Not Victor.<\/p>\n<p>Not Philip Arden.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Bell.<\/p>\n<p>The timestamp was forty-seven minutes after Bell claimed he had left Adrian behind in the garage.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel had repeated Bell\u2019s story for years.<\/p>\n<p>Bell said he drove away.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph proved he returned.<\/p>\n<p>The transcript beneath it contained only six lines.<\/p>\n<p>ADRIAN: You said Eleanor sent you.<\/p>\n<p>BELL: She did.<\/p>\n<p>ADRIAN: Then tell me what she said.<\/p>\n<p>BELL: That the tape is too dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>ADRIAN: Eleanor would never say that.<\/p>\n<p>BELL: No. She wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The next line was written in Adrian\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>If Bell lies about Eleanor, assume Bell is compromised.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Bell had not simply failed Adrian.<\/p>\n<p>He had used my name to gain his trust.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere between that garage and Adrian\u2019s disappearance, he had become part of the trap.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=32502\">Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Thomas Bell Had Used My Name to Lure Adrian, and the Missing Tape Showed Why Edward Crane Needed Him Silenced<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel did not want to explain the call.
