original notes.”

“As E.C.?”

“Yes.”

“Architect?”

“Possibly.”

“Then Victor inherited the network.”

“Or managed it.”

“And Elliot?”

“May have inherited something too.”

At 2:43, company investigators secured Elliot Crane’s office.

He had not arrived that morning.

His assistant said he had called in sick.

His home was empty.

His passport was missing.

A car registered to him had been found at a train station.

No confirmed sighting.

“Running?” Chloe asked.

“Looks that way,” I said.

At 3:12, the red book itself finally surfaced.

Not because Marcus surrendered it.

Because Victor did.

His attorney informed federal prosecutors that Victor would provide the original ledger in exchange for a formal cooperation discussion.

That surprised everyone.

Victor Hale had spent decades refusing to cooperate.

Something had frightened him.

“Crane,” I said.

Ortiz did not disagree.

“If Victor suddenly wants protection,” she said, “he thinks someone above him is still active.”

“Elliot?”

“Maybe.”

“Or someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Where is the book?”

“Victor’s attorney says a courier will deliver it.”

“Do you believe that?”

“No.”

Neither did I.

At 4:01, the courier never arrived.

The vehicle assigned to the delivery was found abandoned four miles from the federal building.

No driver.

No ledger.

The rear door was open.

There was blood on the pavement.

Not much.

Enough.

By 4:18, every federal agency involved was looking for the courier.

Victor’s cooperation meeting was suspended.

His attorney demanded protection.

Claire requested immediate separation from him.

Marcus’s lawyer began calling prosecutors every ten minutes.

The carefully controlled investigation became something else.

Someone had intercepted the one object capable of confirming the original financial structure.

And only a small circle knew it was moving.

A leak.

Again.

At 5:06, Ramos called.

“We found the courier.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Condition?”

“Head injury. Mid-forties to fifties. Gray coat.”

“That describes half the courthouse.”

“He recognized him.”

I gripped the phone.

“Who?”

Ramos paused.

“Elliot Crane.”

The company’s general counsel.

The son of the man whose initials dominated the old ledger.

The man who had entered Marcus’s office before Thanksgiving dinner and asked whether everything had been resolved.

Chloe looked at me.

“So he has the book.”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

“To destroy it.”

“Or use it.”

At 5:31, police located Crane’s abandoned car.

Inside were two phones.

One laptop.

No Crane.

No ledger.

But the laptop contained an open draft email.

No recipient.

No subject.

Only one sentence.

VICTOR THINKS HE INHERITED THIS BUSINESS.
