Bennett studied them, then looked at me differently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re retired?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal prosecutor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssistant United States Attorney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward Chloe. \u201cYour daughter knows?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe does now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyebrows rose, but he wisely left that subject alone.<\/p>\n<p>I gave him the sequence without embellishment: Marcus and Sylvia, the injuries, the terminal, the missing coat and phone, Sylvia\u2019s cleaning, and the security cameras.<\/p>\n<p>When Bennett reached for his radio, I stopped him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would avoid announcing police presence at the residence until you\u2019ve discussed preservation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus has a house full of guests arriving for Thanksgiving. Her sweater and trousers were eventually placed in evidence bags. I watched from the corridor, resisting every instinct to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>I made one call to Daniel Reeves.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had once been a junior prosecutor who survived his first major trial largely because he prepared harder than everyone else. Maybe she finally understands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstands what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat choices have consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let silence stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus filled it exactly as I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had no right going through my things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s between us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you hurt her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe tried to start something with my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe grabbed Sylvia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe says otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course she does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI removed her from the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysically?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe refused to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you forced her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t put words in my mouth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced at Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>He was writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you give her a coat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI paid for that coat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett stopped writing and looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about her missing shoe?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe lost it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow would I know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Sylvia clean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The background noise seemed suddenly louder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe says Sylvia cleaned the living room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never said that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>There are silences produced by anger and silences produced by thought.<\/p>\n<p>This one was thought.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus had finally realized he did not know what Chloe had told me.<\/p>\n<p>His voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should stay out of our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Claire part of your marriage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Chloe told you about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A young woman\u2019s voice floated faintly through the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus, your mother wants you at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>He had heard it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour girlfriend?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus did not bother denying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife changes, Eleanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Chloe discover that last night?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe saw something she shouldn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence came too easily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s none of your concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt became my concern when you left my injured daughter in freezing weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He muttered something I could not make out.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sylvia\u2019s voice rose in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell that woman we are busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus returned to the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Chloe starts making accusations, she\u2019s going to regret it. My company has attorneys who will tear her story apart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who actually understand the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bennett lowered his pen.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled despite myself.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus continued. \u201cYou\u2019re an old woman with too much time and a pension. Stay out of things you don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the federal credential beside the recording device.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnjoy dinner, Marcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really doesn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot even a little?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel called fifteen minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>The security provider had confirmed the account and standard cloud retention.
