in the garage.

He had apparently walked out of the building and vanished into downtown Phoenix.

Vega treated that as flight.

I had learned not to treat anything that simply.

“Could Stephen have taken him?”

Vega looked at me.

“Possible.”

“Could Martin be cooperating with quickly.

Maybe he expected to return.

Or maybe what remained was meant to be found.

Daniel was permitted to assist with identifying Mercer-specific records while investigators preserved evidence.

I was not permitted inside.

Neither was David.

So we waited in Jessica’s office.

Waiting had become its own form of punishment.

David stood at the window.

I sat with the envelope Stephen’s firm had mailed me sealed inside an evidence sleeve on the table.

Jessica worked.

She could apparently bill clients while the world ended.

I envied that.

At 4:18, Daniel called.

“They found a private index.”

“What kind?”

“Martin kept matter numbers separate from the official legal database.”

“Why?”

“Probably because some matters never went through normal existed.

Laura Bennett had not been chosen randomly to hold land.

She had once worked for Mercer’s external government-relations firm.

I knew she had done consulting.

I had not known for whom.

“Richard hired her?” I asked.

“Not originally.”

“Who?”

“Martin.”

David stared.

“You hired Laura?”

“I thought Richard introduced her.”

Daniel continued.

Martin had identified Laura as a suitable nominee because she had three qualities.

No substantial personal wealth.

No criminal me.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It ended before we met.”

“That is not why.”

David looked away.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Laura worked around Mercer later and I thought telling you would make it strange.”

“It was strange.”

“Yes.”

“Did she leave you?”

“I ended it.”

“Why?”

“We wanted different things.”

I almost laughed.

Every cliché had apparently once been true somewhere.

“Did Richard know?”

“Yes.”

“Stephen?”

“Probably.”

“Ethan?”

“Yes.”

“So I was the only person who didn’t.”

David looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

I stood and walked to the other side of the room.

Not because I cared that David had dated someone before me.

I cared that another fact I had interpreted as business history had been personal history everyone else understood.

Laura’s involvement now looked different.

She had not simply been an employee.

She had been someone whose name could plausibly be linked to David.

If Juniper failed, investigators could construct a story around her.

Former lover.

Secret land company.

Money transfers.

David’s company.

A scandal almost wrote itself.

“She was another endpoint,” I said.

Daniel answered.

“Yes.”

Jessica understood.

“Before Claire.”

“Looks that way.”

David turned.

“What?”

Daniel opened Martin’s chronology.

Early versions of Juniper had used Laura as the primary nominee and potential liability endpoint.

Then something changed.

The dinner at our house.

Stephen saw me.

A spouse was cleaner than a former girlfriend.

A spouse required less explanation.

Laura remained useful as Red Mesa’s owner.

But the final contingency shifted toward me.

I felt an unexpected surge of sympathy for her.

Not trust.

Not forgiveness.

Recognition.

Stephen had turned both of us into stories other people would find easy to believe.

The ex-lover hiding land.

The wife quietly benefiting from marital assets.

He had not merely forged documents.

He had forged narratives.

“What did Laura know?” I asked.

Daniel read further.

Martin believed Laura discovered the contingency structure after Stephen reassigned the Stabilizer role.

“She knew I replaced her.”

“Yes.”

“Is that why she helped Mason?”

“Possibly.”

David spoke quietly.

“Guilt.”

I looked at him.

“Or survival.”

“Both can exist.”

He was right.

I disliked that.

Daniel found another entry.

LB threatens disclosure bringing me Mason’s files.

She had risked both.

“What happened to the loan?”

Daniel checked.

Forgiven eleven months ago.

Exactly around the time Laura claimed she last saw Mason.

“Who authorized forgiveness?”

“Stephen Carrow.”

“Why?”

“Martin’s note says LB
