was.

“Yes.”

“That was a mistake.”

“She said the same about David.”

“I imagine she did.”

“Everyone tells me not to trust everyone else.”

“That should tell you something.”

“It tells me I married into a group of cowards.”

David looked offended for half a second.

Then conceded silently.

Stephen almost laughed.

“You are more perceptive than they gave you credit for.”

“Who is they?”

No answer.

“Richard?”

Still nothing.

“You?”

He changed direction.

“Mrs. Mercer, do not sign anything until we speak.”

That surprised all of us.

I looked at Vega.

“Why?”

“Because there are versions of those documents in circulation that are not valid.”

Jessica’s eyes narrowed.

“Your office mailed them.”

“Yes.”

“Then which part is invalid?”

“I cannot discuss that safely by phone.”

Safely.

Not legally.

Safely.

“Who are you afraid of, Stephen?”

The first name slipped out deliberately.

He noticed.

His voice cooled.

“This situation is more complicated than Ethan understands.”

“Then explain it.”

“In person.”

“Where?”

“Tomorrow.”

Vega mouthed:

NO COMMITMENT.

I said, “I’ll think about it.”

Stephen replied quietly.

“You should decide quickly.”

“Why?”

“Because once Orchard North votes, I may not be able to protect Sam’s interest.”

My blood went cold.

“You put him there.”

“No.”

That answer came instantly.

“Who did?”

Silence.

“Stephen.”

Another breath.

Then he said, “David.”

Every person in the room looked at David.

David’s face hardened.

“No,” he mouthed.

I kept my voice even.

“David says he didn’t.”

“David says many things when he is afraid.”

“So do you.”

Stephen did not react.

“What exactly did David authorize?”

“He signed the original family continuity schedule.”

David shook his head violently.

I asked, “When?”

“The night after the dinner at your home.”

David stopped.

Something changed in his face.

Not denial.

Memory.

“What?” I whispered.

Stephen heard.

“You should ask your former husband what he signed in Richard Voss’s study the following evening.”

Then the line went dead.

I lowered the phone.

Everyone looked at David.

He sat very still.

“I went to Richard’s house.”

My chest tightened.

“You remember.”

“Yes.”

“What did you sign?”

He looked at the succession plan on Daniel’s monitor.

Then at Sam’s name.

“I don’t know.”

I stood.

“Think.”

“I am.”

“David.”

“I signed a continuity packet.”

The room went silent.

“For what?”

“I thought it covered Mercer if I died.”

“Did it name Sam?”

“I don’t remember.”

“Did it name me?”

“I don’t remember.”

“You never remember the pages that matter.”

He took that without defense.

Then he looked at me with something I had not seen from him before.

Not fear for himself.

Fear that he had finally reached the one mistake he could not blame on ignorance.

“What if Stephen is telling the truth?”

I hated the question.

Because I had been asking whether David could be trusted again.

And now the answer might depend on whether he could trust himself.

Click
