Some account activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know you copied records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that why you disappeared?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you send the photo of Sam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you recognize the tablet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at Vega.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI gave it to Mason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMonths before he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tablet you reported stolen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe needed access to internal files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Mason had Ethan\u2019s tablet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen after Mason vanished?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never got it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The threatening photograph had been sent from a device last known to be in Mason\u2019s possession.<\/p>\n<p>That changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Mason had it,\u201d I said, \u201cthen someone connected to Mason may have photographed Sam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr someone who took his things,\u201d Vega said.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you run?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause whoever sent that message wanted us to know they had Mason\u2019s device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A warning, just as he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Not random surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>A deliberate signal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can reach your family,\u201d I whispered. \u201cWe have his files. Stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat message was not for you alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>He saw the device identifier and knew immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Someone was telling Ethan they had what belonged to Mason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is in the last folder that matters so much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the glass window in the interview room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStephen\u2019s contingency manual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had not found anything by that name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA private set of instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Juniper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow to respond if any participant gets investigated, dies, defects, divorces, or cooperates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin crawled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe planned everyone\u2019s failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did it say about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer murmured something.<\/p>\n<p>Ethan shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe deserves this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour designation was Stabilizer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Juniper fractured, you were supposed to inherit enough responsibility to absorb scrutiny without having enough information to fight efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sam?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContinuity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOperator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNominee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cController.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCapital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Stephen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he call himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me more than any title.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone else had a role.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Carrow stood outside the structure he created.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica asked the question I should have asked earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was irreplaceable?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ethan looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a plan like this, everyone has substitutes.
