Rebecca.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked to speak to Claire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David immediately said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t decide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Ethan built this\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Ethan built it, I want to hear him say it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega raised her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is speaking to him yet except investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter counsel is arranged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say why he wants me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says he owes you an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That did not interest me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega checked her notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says your signature was used because of him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsed how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t explain over the initial interview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he forge it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Laura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe refused to answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s protecting her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike also said the photograph of Sam was not a threat from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says it was a warning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat message said stop opening Mason\u2019s files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounds like a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike claims whoever sent it wanted you to stop before you found the last folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat last folder?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega\u2019s eyes moved toward Laura\u2019s flash drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Mason created a second encrypted archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve only found the EP folder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike says that isn\u2019t it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it called?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My initials again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says Mason showed him one document before he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat document?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA copy of the original Red Mesa ownership agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura owns Red Mesa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn paper,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Laura\u2019s exact words.<\/p>\n<p>Vega continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Pike, the original agreement identifies the beneficial owners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe only saw part of the page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My patience broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega\u2019s expression was unreadable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPike says the first beneficial interest belonged to Laura Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not surprising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the second?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe says it was assigned to a trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did not recognize the formal name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was the beneficiary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time Vega hesitated long enough that I knew the answer would change something fundamental.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the empty chair beside me as if my son might somehow be sitting there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David had gone completely pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never authorized that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica asked, \u201cWhen was the agreement executed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Before Mason disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Before I knew Red Mesa existed.<\/p>\n<p>Before Sam was old enough to understand what a trust was.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at David.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you put him into Red Mesa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Ethan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaura?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For once, those words frightened David as much as they frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned back to Mason\u2019s archive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf CM exists, it may be hidden rather than simply encrypted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He began searching file structures rather than filenames.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica asked Vega, \u201cDid Ethan explain why Sam would be a beneficiary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega read his exact statement from her notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said: \u2018That was the moment I understood Juniper was never just a land deal.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A minute later, Daniel stopped typing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We crowded behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Inside an image directory was a file with no visible extension.<\/p>\n<p>Its creation date was the night before Mason disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel isolated it.<\/p>\n<p>The file was encrypted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you open it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot without the key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPassword?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vega said, \u201cDo not start guessing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something in the file metadata.<\/p>\n<p>A comment field.<\/p>\n<p>Four words.<\/p>\n<p>Claire knows the question.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody knew.<\/p>\n<p>Then a memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Not from the divorce.<\/p>\n<p>Not from the financial records.<\/p>\n<p>From years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>A dinner at our house.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Voss sitting at the walnut table with David, Ethan and Laura.<\/p>\n<p>Sam had been five.<\/p>\n<p>He wandered downstairs in dinosaur pajamas because he could not sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Richard lifted him onto his knee and asked him a strange question.<\/p>\n<p>I had forgotten it because it sounded like a game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf somebody gave you a mountain,\u201d Richard had said, \u201cwhat would you do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sam thought seriously.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered, \u201cI\u2019d give it to Mom because she knows where things go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everyone laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone except Laura.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered that now.<\/p>\n<p>And I remembered something else.<\/p>\n<p>Richard had looked across the table at me and asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you do with something valuable if owning it could hurt the person you loved?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, I thought he was talking philosophically.<\/p>\n<p>I had answered without thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d make sure they never owned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the encrypted file.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the comment.<\/p>\n<p>Claire knows the question.<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTry \u2018never owned it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel typed the phrase.<\/p>\n<p>The archive opened.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were seven documents.<\/p>\n<p>The first was the original Red Mesa agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The second was a trust instrument bearing Sam\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>The third was a ledger.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth was an insurance memorandum.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth was a letter from Mason.<\/p>\n<p>The sixth was an audio file.<\/p>\n<p>And the seventh had a title that made David grip the back of Daniel\u2019s chair.<\/p>\n<p>SUCCESSION PLAN \u2014 JUNIPER.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The first page contained a diagram.<\/p>\n<p>At the top was Richard Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Below him, Cedar Bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Then Red Mesa.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer Development.<\/p>\n<p>A network of trusts.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, inside a box marked CONTINGENT CONTROL, was Sam Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>And beside his name, in smaller type, were the words:<\/p>\n<p>Guardian\/Trustee upon triggering event: Claire B.
