smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles wanted to visit Sarah\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n<p>With Leo.<\/p>\n<p>Not alone.<\/p>\n<p>Not secretly.<\/p>\n<p>Not to be forgiven.<\/p>\n<p>He had never gone there since the funeral.<\/p>\n<p>He wrote that he had spent ten years avoiding the place because the grave represented the point beyond which his influence had failed completely.<\/p>\n<p>Leo read that line twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then folded the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to decide now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He put the letter back.<\/p>\n<p>Then he found his missing shoe under my sofa.<\/p>\n<p>No one mentioned Charles again until after the baseball game.<\/p>\n<p>Leo\u2019s team won by one run.<\/p>\n<p>He struck out twice and made the final out at second base.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was unbearable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw that throw?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom shortstop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sitting beside you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerfect release.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccurate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo climbed into the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you talking about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>Leo groaned.<\/p>\n<p>At lunch, he asked, \u201cWould Mom want Charles at her grave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question stopped us.<\/p>\n<p>I answered carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel remained what everyone says when they don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnoying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took another bite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you hate Charles?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you love him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon, he called Charles himself.<\/p>\n<p>No speakerphone.<\/p>\n<p>No adults listening.<\/p>\n<p>He went into the backyard.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel watched through the window until I told him to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was kidnapped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sentence does not become less true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither does Sarah\u2019s warning about control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He moved away from the window.<\/p>\n<p>Barely.<\/p>\n<p>Leo returned ten minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe can come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext Sunday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want me there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandma?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElizabeth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday came cold and bright.<\/p>\n<p>Charles arrived without Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Without a driver.<\/p>\n<p>Without security.<\/p>\n<p>He drove himself.<\/p>\n<p>That worried Daniel more than armed guards ever had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re allowed to drive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Leo met him near the cemetery gate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHello.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked older last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We walked toward Sarah\u2019s grave.<\/p>\n<p>Charles slowed as we approached.<\/p>\n<p>His cane sank slightly into the grass.<\/p>\n<p>For the first nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe can\u2019t hear you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why say it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles looked at the stone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I should have said it when she could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo accepted that.<\/p>\n<p>Charles spoke quietly.<\/p>\n<p>He apologized for surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>For threats.<\/p>\n<p>For treating Sarah as a problem to manage.<\/p>\n<p>For teaching Daniel that obedience was safer than judgment.<\/p>\n<p>For employing Harlan after knowing he was corrupt.<\/p>\n<p>For hiding the truth afterward because exposure would damage the Whitmore name.<\/p>\n<p>He did not apologize for things he had not done.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>No claim that he killed Sarah.<\/p>\n<p>No false confession to make the story simpler.<\/p>\n<p>Only his own choices.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel listened with his hands in his pockets.<\/p>\n<p>When Charles finished, Leo asked, \u201cDo you feel better?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel almost choked.<\/p>\n<p>Leo shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf saying sorry made everything feel better, people would just do bad stuff and apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They stood quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Then Charles reached into his coat.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel tensed.<\/p>\n<p>Charles noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed a folded document.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConfirmation that the restitution foundation is permanently independent of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou brought legal paperwork to a cemetery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles looked offended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t bring flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>Even Leo smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Charles handed the document to Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t need to read it headstone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving, Charles asked if he could have one minute alone.<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>We walked toward the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel kept glancing back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re walking backward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned around.<\/p>\n<p>At the car, Charles joined us.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes were red.<\/p>\n<p>No one commented.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Leo surprised all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to come to my game next week?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles froze.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Leo continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t yell at the umpire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never yelled at an umpire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve never been to a Little League game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll text you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have my number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did that happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you sent me the package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Charles smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>Real.<\/p>\n<p>We watched him leave.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood beside Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know you didn\u2019t have to invite him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe showed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>The rule Sarah had left
