kicked backward hard into Pike\u2019s injured leg.<\/p>\n<p>Pike collapsed with a shout.<\/p>\n<p>Janice threw herself sideways.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel rushed forward.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa drew her weapon.<\/p>\n<p>I heard a crack.<\/p>\n<p>Not a gunshot.<\/p>\n<p>A fire alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Sprinklers exploded overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Water poured from the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Lights began flashing.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had pulled an emergency lever mounted beside the door.<\/p>\n<p>The alarm screamed across the marina.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa looked toward the exits.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached Leo.<\/p>\n<p>I grabbed Janice.<\/p>\n<p>Pike fired once into the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Then outside, engines roared.<\/p>\n<p>Frank had his signal.<\/p>\n<p>Not ours.<\/p>\n<p>The alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Police vehicles stormed through the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa ran.<\/p>\n<p>Pike tried to stand.<\/p>\n<p>His injured leg failed.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel held Leo behind him.<\/p>\n<p>Officers shouted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrop the weapon!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pike looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I thought he would fire.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he dropped the gun.<\/p>\n<p>Hands came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time, the promise had survived.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedics checked Leo and Janice.<\/p>\n<p>No serious injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Pike was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa too.<\/p>\n<p>Frank stood beside us afterward, soaked from the sprinklers and furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two are never doing anything I tell you again, are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel answered at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janice took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas hid it with Robert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Robert where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot his body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis grave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Janice continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas went to Robert\u2019s funeral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helen whispered, \u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe put something beneath the flowers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA metal helped.<\/p>\n<p>The records that could identify every child whose birth had been manipulated.<\/p>\n<p>Pike had wanted the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>But the token was more dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Because the ledger showed what happened.<\/p>\n<p>The archive could prove who was responsible.<\/p>\n<p>And according to Janice, Thomas Bell had hidden the key to it beneath Robert Hale\u2019s grave nine years
