Basement corridor. 2:14 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan took Leo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened at 2:26 when he came back?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is what you need to ask Janice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere do we find her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A sharp crack interrupted him.<\/p>\n<p>Cross jerked.<\/p>\n<p>For half a second, I thought something had exploded near the church.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel pulled me down behind the car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay down!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s officers ran toward us.<\/p>\n<p>Cross collapsed against the pavement.<\/p>\n<p>Blood spread across his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>A second crack came from the trees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShooter!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything became motion.<\/p>\n<p>One officer dragged Cross behind the vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Another moved toward the church wall.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel covered my head with his body.<\/p>\n<p>I could hear Cross gasping.<\/p>\n<p>Frank\u2019s voice shouted somewhere beyond the cars.<\/p>\n<p>Then an engine roared from the road behind the church.<\/p>\n<p>A vehicle tore away through gravel.<\/p>\n<p>Within seconds, silence returned.<\/p>\n<p>Cross was conscious.<\/p>\n<p>The bullet had passed through his upper shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>As paramedics worked on him, he gripped Daniel\u2019s sleeve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarlan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t confront him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross struggled for breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019ll know Janice is alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is she?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cross whispered an address.<\/p>\n<p>Not Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p>Maine.<\/p>\n<p>Then his eyes closed as the paramedics lifted him.<\/p>\n<p>Frank came toward us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he identify the shooter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say anything useful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and I looked at each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We now knew where to find the only witness who had seen Peter Harlan alone with Leo during the twelve minutes my newborn grandson vanished.<\/p>\n<p>And someone had just fired a rifle at the man who told us.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=32285\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Nurse Who Found Leo in the Basement Remembered What Harlan Carried\u2014and Why Sarah\u2019s Baby Was Returned Before Anyone Noticed<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frank refused to let us drive to the abandoned church alone.
