Complicated is acceptable. He wants a private meeting where nothing is recorded and everything becomes his version against yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to hear what he says.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to hear what he says when consequences exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marisa\u2019s expression remained unmoved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo are all of us. It does not improve his evidentiary position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn coughed into her hand to hide a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Even Daniel smiled reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>I left them arguing and went upstairs to Sarah\u2019s old room.<\/p>\n<p>I had never changed it completely.<\/p>\n<p>The bed was different. So were the curtains. We don\u2019t build stories first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That discipline irritated him.<\/p>\n<p>It also kept us from becoming Charles.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa found an old address for Robert\u2019s widow.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Hale still lived in Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we contact her?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked at Sarah\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He resumed reading.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end, Sarah had written something strange.<\/p>\n<p>If Robert gives you the blue notebook, don\u2019t bring it to the house.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat blue notebook?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither had I.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa leaned over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel reached the last paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Then stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He handed me the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had written that if she died during childbirth, Daniel must not accept the first account he was given.<\/p>\n<p>She had become convinced someone was altering information around her.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely watching.<\/p>\n<p>Changing records.<\/p>\n<p>Changing messages.<\/p>\n<p>Changing reality between people who trusted one another.<\/p>\n<p>The final line was simple.<\/p>\n<p>Ask Robert what Charles needed Dr. Harlan to do.<\/p>\n<p>No one in the room moved.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa broke the silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe contact Helen Hale now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She found a telephone number.<\/p>\n<p>The first call went unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>The second reached voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel left his name.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty minutes later, Helen called back.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa put the phone on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s voice was cautious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy name is Marisa Chen.
