Public access was prohibited, but old service tunnels remained.

Shaw knew them.

Catherine apparently did too.

Sloan’s team approached from three directions.

George, Thomas, and Edwin remained behind the first perimeter until the building was secured.

Daniel stayed farther back under protection.

He objected.

Nobody cared.

The first officers entered shortly after midnight.

They found Catherine’s coat beside the stairwell.

No blood.

Her phone lay inside one pocket.

She had intentionally left it.

Farther down, a basement door stood open.

The smell rising from below was damp concrete, rust, and stagnant water.

Clara had described the corridor from Anna’s photographs.

Blue tile halfway up the walls.

A boiler room on the left.

Old examination rooms on the right.

At the far end, a records chamber.

Most of it remained.

Time had not erased enough.

Sloan found fresh footprints in the dust.

Two sets.

Catherine’s smaller prints.

Another from a cane user.

Leonard Shaw.

They followed them.

George listened through Sloan’s audio feed from outside.

Thomas paced.

Edwin sat perfectly still.

Then Sloan found blood.

Only a few drops.

Near the old records room.

Thomas stopped pacing.

“Whose?”

No answer yet.

The door ahead was locked.

Sloan called for equipment.

Before officers forced it, a woman shouted from inside.

Catherine.

“Don’t break it!”

Sloan identified himself.

Catherine shouted again.

“He rigged the shelves.”

Another trap.

Shaw had learned from Jonathan’s ledger mechanism or perhaps designed the earlier device himself.

Technicians entered through an adjoining ventilation opening.

Inside, Catherine stood against the far wall.

Leonard Shaw sat in a chair.

Ninety-plus years old.

Thin.

White-haired.

A cane beside him.

A pistol rested in his lap.

He was not pointing it at Catherine.

Catherine held a gun too.

Hers was pointed at him.

Between them stood a shelf containing old Harbor Ridge files.

A cable ran from the shelf toward several chemical containers.

Shaw had prepared to destroy the room.

Catherine could have shot him.

She had not.

Sloan entered slowly.

“Put the weapons down.”

Shaw smiled.

“You’re late by about sixty years.”

Catherine said, “Tell them.”

Shaw looked at her.

“You came here for an apology?”

“I came for the truth.”

“You already chose yours.”

Catherine’s hand trembled.

Sloan repeated his command.

Catherine lowered her gun first.

Shaw watched her.

Then placed his pistol on the floor.

Officers secured him.

Nobody relaxed.

The destruction mechanism remained active.

Technicians began disabling it.

Thomas was allowed inside only after Shaw was restrained.

The moment Shaw saw him, his expression changed.

“Evelyn’s boy.”

Thomas stopped.

“My name is Thomas.”

“I know.”

“Did you kill Peter?”

Shaw looked toward the shelves.

“That’s what Anna thought.”

George arrived behind Thomas.

“What happened?”

Shaw refused.

Catherine pointed toward a metal cabinet.

“Open drawer four.”

Sloan had it checked for traps.

None.

Inside were old photographic negatives.

Medical notes.

And one reel of film.

Not microfilm.

Motion-picture film.

Harbor Ridge had used cameras in certain corridors after repeated escape attempts.

Most footage was supposedly destroyed.

Shaw kept some.

The reel was fragile but recoverable.

A mobile forensic unit digitized enough to view the relevant section.

No sound.

The image flickered.

A basement corridor appeared.

Peter Holt entered first.

He was carrying a book.

Behind him came Anna.

Younger than we had seen her in the wide photograph.

Peter noticed her and gestured for her to stay back.

Then Leonard Shaw entered.

He confronted Peter.

The boy tried to run.

Shaw grabbed him.

Peter fought.

Shaw struck him.

Once.

Peter fell against a metal cabinet.

The footage seemed to confirm murder.

Then Peter moved.

He was alive.

Shaw knelt.

Not to help.

To take the book from Peter’s hand.

The red ledger.

Peter had stolen Jonathan’s ledger.

That was why Shaw pursued him.

Anna watched from behind the doorway.

Then Richard Vale entered.

Exactly as the still photographs showed.

But the film continued beyond Anna’s preserved frames.

Richard pushed Shaw away.

He checked Peter.

Peter sat up.

Alive.

George turned toward Shaw.

“You didn’t kill him there.”

Shaw said nothing.

The film showed Richard helping Peter stand.

Then another man entered.

Arthur Mercer.

Grant’s father.

Arthur struck Richard from behind.

Richard collapsed.

Anna ran.

Shaw chased her.

Arthur remained with Peter.

The film ended.

Thomas stared at the blank screen.

“So Arthur killed him.”

Shaw finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“Peter escaped again.”

George felt frustration surge.

“Then how did he die?”

Shaw looked toward Edwin.

“He didn’t.”

Edwin stood.

“What?”

Shaw smiled faintly.

“You people still haven’t learned.”

Peter Holt’s body had been identified as Edwin Mercer.

We had accepted that because of the collarbone fracture.

But Harbor Ridge had manipulated physical records too.

Shaw said the body in Edwin’s grave was not Peter.

The fracture notation was inserted later.

Clara’s conclusion had been based on fabricated medical evidence.

George asked whose body was buried there.

Shaw answered.

“A boy called Michael Price.”

Thomas recoiled.

Price.

Evelyn’s family.

Shaw’s family.

Michael was Shaw’s younger brother.

A Harbor Ridge resident hidden under another surname.

He died after an accident.

Arthur used Michael’s body as the substitute.

Shaw allowed it.

“Why?”

“Because Arthur promised Peter would be spared.”

“Was he?”

Shaw looked at Thomas.

“For a while.”

Peter escaped Harbor Ridge with help from Evelyn Price.

Margaret.

She hid him under another identity.

That was why Evelyn’s swallow marked Peter as LOST rather than DEAD.

She lost contact with him.

Not his life.

George asked whether Peter might still be alive.

Shaw shrugged.

“If I am, why not?”

Catherine stepped toward him.

“Anna believed she saw you kill him.”

“She saw what fear remembered.”

“You chased her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep her from telling Jonathan Peter had the ledger.”

That explanation did not absolve him.

It made the conspiracy wider.

Shaw had protected Peter temporarily while simultaneously terrorizing Anna and manipulating records.

No one fit cleanly into a single role.

Catherine asked the question that mattered.

“Why did you order Anna transferred?”

Shaw looked at her.

“Because Arthur wanted her killed.”

The room went still.

Shaw claimed the transfer order had been forged to look like an institutional placement.

In reality, he moved Anna into a protected wing where Arthur could not easily reach her.

Richard later took over.

Catherine stared at him.

“You expect me to believe you saved her?”

“No.”

Shaw’s voice was tired.

“I expect you to understand that people can do one decent thing after doing ten unforgivable ones.”

George asked about Lucy.

“Why deliver her?”

“Anna asked me.”

That contradicted Clara.

Shaw explained that by the time Lucy was born, Anna knew his real identity.

Not everything.

Enough.

She hated him.

But she needed a physician who understood how to create a birth record that could not easily be traced.

Shaw did it.

Then Anna made him promise never to approach Lucy.

He kept that promise.

Until the trust activated.

George said, “You’ve known where Lucy was.”

“Yes.”

“And you never went near her?”

“Never.”

“Then why take control using her credentials?”

“To stop Arthur’s son from doing it first.”

Grant Mercer.

Shaw insisted Grant had spent years trying to locate the red ledger.

Grant denied ordering the attack at River Building 6, but Shaw believed Grant knew who had.

A private group descended from Harbor Ridge beneficiaries.

Families whose wealth depended on altered identities remaining unexamined.

The armed men were not protecting Grant personally.

They were protecting the structure.

Sloan asked for names.

Shaw pointed toward the shelves.

“Disable the chemicals.”

Technicians finished minutes later.

The files survived.

Inside one cabinet were lists.

Dozens of names.

Payments continuing long after Harbor Ridge closed.

Some recent.

George realized Harbor Ridge had not survived as a place.

It survived as an agreement.

People inherited the benefits.

Then inherited the obligation to keep quiet.

Thomas looked at Shaw.

“Where is Peter?”

Shaw said he did not know.

But Evelyn had received one postcard twenty-two years after Peter disappeared.

No return address.

Only a sentence.

I KEPT THE BOOK SAFE.

Thomas looked toward the red leather fragment Clara saved.

“If Peter had the book, how did Arthur get it?”

Shaw smiled grimly.

“He didn’t.”

The red ledger Arthur possessed was a copy.

Jonathan’s copy.

Peter had stolen the original.

That meant Clara had not found the final record.

Somewhere, perhaps still existing, was an original red ledger untouched by Arthur, Shaw, Richard, or Anna.

George asked what it contained.

Shaw answered quietly.

“The real names.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 31: Peter Holt’s Possible
