Teams moving.”

Outside, engines revved.

One vehicle backed toward the loading doors.

Another blocked the river road.

Whoever arrived had planned for escape and containment at the same time.

George shouted, “Richard!”

Richard answered from the rear.

“There’s another exit.”

Thomas snapped, “Of course there is.”

They moved through darkness using the small lights on their phones.

The rear room contained a rusted shelving unit.

Richard pulled it aside.

Behind it was a narrow steel door.

He entered a code.

Nothing happened.

He tried again.

Red light.

Thomas said, “They changed it.”

Richard stared at the keypad.

“No one knew the code.”

Catherine said, “Someone did.”

Another shot struck brick outside.

Sloan’s team returned fire only after one of the unknown men raised a weapon toward an officer.

The warehouse filled with distant commands.

George looked at Richard.

“Who else knew about this building?”

Richard finally answered the question he had avoided.

“Arthur Mercer.”

Daniel and Edwin both reacted when the name passed through George’s receiver to the command vehicle.

Arthur.

Their cousin.

Jonathan’s business partner.

Officially dead for eighteen years.

Another Mercer death nobody should trust.

Daniel’s voice came over comms.

“Arthur knew the river property.”

Edwin pressed a hand against the wall.

He remembered Arthur visiting Harbor Ridge.

Always in expensive shoes inappropriate for the mud.

Always smiling.

Never speaking to children unless an adult was watching.

Richard said Arthur helped Jonathan convert altered identities into financial transactions.

Insurance.

Trusts.

Property transfers.

If a child’s name changed, ownership could change with it.

Arthur made the paperwork profitable.

Jonathan created leverage.

Arthur created money.

When Jonathan disappeared, Arthur inherited the network.

George asked whether Arthur was alive.

Richard said, “His son is.”

The name was Grant Mercer.

Sloan found it quickly.

Sixty-three.

No serious criminal record.

Corporate attorney.

Board member of several private foundations.

One foundation had quietly paid storage fees on former Harbor Ridge properties for decades.

George asked why Grant would attack now.

Richard answered.

“Because the ledger names Arthur.”

Thomas said, “And Grant has spent years buying anything that proves his father was involved.”

That explained the photograph left at George’s house.

Perhaps Marian had not left it.

Perhaps Grant’s people had.

YOU HAVE THE WRONG MERCER AGAIN.

They had been warning us away from Daniel because another Mercer line mattered more.

Or manipulating us toward the brothers while Grant erased evidence elsewhere.

A crash sounded near the loading bay.

Sloan ordered everyone toward the northeast exit.

Richard refused.

“The ledger.”

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Forget it.”

“You came here for it.”

“I came here to destroy it.”

“And if Grant gets it first?”

Thomas stopped.

That was the problem.

Destroyed evidence could never hurt Grant.

But evidence in Grant’s hands could be selectively erased, altered, or used against others.

George asked Richard where the compartment was.

Richard pointed toward the floor beneath the old loading scale.

The steel door in the rear was only one access route.

A second mechanical release existed under the scale platform.

Thomas swore.

“You never told me that.”

“That was the point.”

Catherine said, “We do not have time.”

But Richard was already moving.

George followed.

Edwin did too.

Thomas hesitated, then joined them.

They crossed the dark warehouse crouched low.

Outside, Sloan’s officers were closing on the vehicles.

One attacker fled toward the river.

Another surrendered.

A third disappeared between buildings.

Inside, Richard knelt beside the loading scale and found a recessed handle under decades of grime.

He pulled.

Nothing.

Edwin joined him.

Together they lifted.

A narrow panel shifted.

Beneath it sat a waterproof case.

Thomas stared.

“All these years.”

Richard lifted the case.

“You wanted the truth.”

“I wanted my life back.”

“No document can give you that.”

Thomas’s face twisted.

“That never stopped you from using documents to take it.”

George took the case before the argument could explode.

“Not here.”

A figure appeared at the far doorway.

Everyone froze.

A man stepped into the dim emergency light.

Gray suit.

No weapon visible.

Grant Mercer.

George recognized him from Sloan’s rapidly transmitted photograph.

Grant raised both hands.

“I’m not with the shooters.”

Richard laughed once.

“You paid them.”

“No.”

“Your father taught you to lie better than that.”

Grant looked at the waterproof case.

“That ledger belongs to my family.”

Thomas moved forward.

“So did I, apparently.”

Grant’s eyes shifted to him.

Something passed across his face.

Recognition.

Not from tonight.

Older.

Thomas saw it.

“You know me.”

Grant said nothing.

Thomas stepped closer.

“You’ve seen me before.”

Grant finally answered.

“When I was a child.”

That surprised everyone.

Grant had been brought to Harbor Ridge by Arthur Mercer.

Not once.

Several times.

He remembered Thomas because Arthur pointed him out.

Told Grant never to speak to that boy.

“Why?” George asked.

Grant’s expression hardened.

“Because my father said Thomas could ruin us.”

Thomas gave a dry laugh.

“I was nine.”

Grant looked ashamed.

“My father was afraid of children because children became adults.”

That sentence sounded almost like confession.

Sloan’s team entered from the west side.

Weapons raised.

Grant immediately complied.

Richard did not relax.

Sloan demanded to know whether Grant had ordered the attack.

Grant denied it.

One captured shooter was identified within minutes.

Former private security.

Employed by a company owned through a trust connected not to Grant.

To Vale Holdings.

Everyone turned toward Richard.

Richard’s face went white.

“That’s impossible.”

Sloan checked again.

The corporate ownership was recent.

Control had transferred six months earlier.

To a named trustee.

Lucy.

George stared.

Lucy could not have ordered armed men.

She did not even know about the trust until hours earlier.

Which meant someone had used her successor status to take control quietly.

Sloan’s analyst found the authorization.

Signed electronically under Anna’s old credentials.

Years after Anna’s death.

The signature was fraudulent.

Someone had been acting as Anna.

For years.

Richard whispered, “Catherine?”

Catherine looked at him in disbelief.

Thomas immediately stepped between them.

“No.”

Richard said, “Who else had Anna’s credentials?”

Catherine’s expression changed.

One person.

A woman Anna trusted to handle legal correspondence during the years she was hiding Lucy.

George asked the name.

Catherine said, “Clara.”

Silence.

Edwin stared.

“No.”

Clara had guided us toward the missing Harbor Ridge page.

Clara had understood the records better than almost anyone.

Clara had appeared frightened.

Helpful.

Relentlessly careful.

Sloan immediately called her protection detail.

No answer.

He tried again.

One officer responded.

Clara was gone.

The officer assigned outside her room had been found unconscious in a service corridor.

No gunshot.

Sedative.

The same style of clean removal Harbor Ridge had used decades earlier.

George felt cold.

Richard said, “She knows about the river ledger.”

Thomas turned.

“How?”

Richard looked at him.

“Because Clara was Anna’s archivist.”

Not merely a researcher.

Not merely someone who had discovered Harbor Ridge later.

Anna had recruited Clara years earlier to organize copies of protected records.

Clara knew about Lucy.

The trust.

The third page.

Possibly Catherine.

Possibly Edwin.

George asked why she pretended otherwise.

Richard said he did not know.

Then Daniel’s voice came through the receiver.

“I do.”

Everyone listened.

Daniel had remembered Clara’s surname before marriage.

Price.

Not Mercer.

Not Vale.

Price.

The same family as Evelyn.

Margaret.

Thomas froze.

George asked, “How is Clara related?”

Daniel said, “Evelyn had a younger sister.”

Marian confirmed it minutes later.

The sister had a daughter.

That daughter was Clara’s mother.

Clara was Evelyn Price’s grandniece.

Thomas’s blood relative.

She had never mentioned it.

George looked at the case containing Jonathan’s ledger.

Clara had not merely been searching for truth.

She had inherited one side of it.

Sloan ordered the case moved immediately.

Before they could leave, George’s phone vibrated.

A message from Clara.

No photograph.

No threat.

Just a sentence.

DO NOT LET RICHARD OPEN THE LEDGER.

Then a second message.

THE FIRST PAGE IS A LIE.

Click here to continue reading: PART 28: Clara’s Warning Turned Jonathan’s Ledger Into a Trap, and Its Hidden
