Elias distrusted him because the deliveries did not appear on invoices.

Marian had seen him twice.

The ring caught her attention because her father once joked that anyone doing dirty work should avoid wearing jewelry people remembered.

George did not smile.

He asked Marian whether the young man interacted with Anna.

She could not say.

The photograph did.

His hand rested protectively—or possessively—on her shoulder.

George stood abruptly.

"I need to go home."

Sloan objected until George explained.

His father kept one metal document box that nobody was allowed to open.

After his death, George found it locked inside a cabinet.

He had tried the obvious keys, failed, and eventually stored it with the rest of the estate material.

Sloan asked why he had never mentioned it.

"Because I thought it held tax records or something he didn't want my mother finding."

"Where is it?"

George looked at him.

"My garage."

We went with him.

Nobody took chances after the restaurant.

Two officers checked the property before we entered.

The box sat beneath old camping equipment exactly where George remembered.

It was smaller than I expected.

Gray steel.

Two locks.

No label.

Sloan wanted a technician to open it without damaging the contents.

George disappeared into the house.

He returned holding the cedar box where we had found Margaret's letter.

He removed the false bottom again.

This time he pressed along one wooden edge.

A tiny brass key slid free.

George stared at it.

His father had hidden the key beside the letter all along.

The first lock opened.

The second required the same key turned backward.

Inside were seven envelopes, a cassette tape, two photographs, a child's hospital bracelet, and a small ledger.

The bracelet read ANNIE P.

George sat down hard on the workbench stool.

Clara picked up one photograph.

It showed George's father much younger, standing beside Evelyn Price—the woman who later became Margaret Holt.

Between them stood the girl from the Harbor Ridge picture.

Anna.

On the back George's father had written:

She cannot stay here.

The second photograph showed the same girl several years later.

Different clothes.

Different hair.

Different name written underneath.

Anna.

No surname.

The ledger explained the nighttime deliveries.

George's father had driven supplies to Harbor Ridge.

But the entries changed halfway through.

Food.

Blankets.

Medication.

Then names.

Dates.

Destinations.

He had become part of Elias and Margaret's effort to move children out secretly.

George pressed both hands against his face.

"He was helping them."

Sloan did not answer.

Not yet.

Because the ledger also contained payments.

Large ones.

Some from Richard Vale.

Some from a Mercer-controlled account.

George saw them.

His relief disappeared.

The entries could mean his father was being paid to help children escape.

They could also mean he had been paid to move them for the very people changing their identities.

We needed the cassette.

George still owned an old player.

The tape hissed for nearly twenty seconds before a young man's voice began.

George recognized his father immediately.

The recording had apparently been made for Elias Reed.

He described a plan to remove Annie from Harbor Ridge.

Evelyn Price had discovered Richard Vale intended to transfer the girl under a new identity.

George's father agreed to drive.

Then another voice entered.

Evelyn.

Margaret.

She said Thomas could not go with them.

Not yet.

The young George's father objected.

"He'll know we chose her."

Margaret answered, "If we take both, Vale follows both."

The tape clicked.

When it resumed, George's father sounded angry.

"You told Thomas you're his mother."

A long pause.

Then Margaret said, "It's the only reason he trusts me."

Nobody in the garage moved.

Thomas was not Margaret's son.

The relationship at the center of his childhood had been constructed.

Margaret had lied to protect him—or control him.

The recording continued.

George's father asked who Thomas's mother really was.

Margaret refused to say.

He pressed.

Finally she answered.

"Ask Richard why he keeps the Price file locked."

Clara whispered, "Price."

Evelyn Price.

Margaret's original name.

But if Thomas's maternal identity was hidden in the Price file, the connection could be much closer than we thought.

The tape ended before explaining it.

Sloan opened the hospital bracelet envelope.

Inside was a photocopied birth registration.

Most of the text had faded.

The mother's name remained readable.

EVELYN PRICE.

The child's name was not Anna's.

It was Thomas's.

George stared.

Margaret had been Thomas's mother after all.

She had lied about lying.

Or the recording itself had been designed for someone else to hear.

Clara noticed a handwritten amendment at the bottom.

Father:

RICHARD VALE.

Thomas's parentage was confirmed.

Then she turned the page.

A second birth record had been stapled behind it.

Anna.

Same father.

Different mother.

The mother's surname made George stand.

Mercer.

Her first name was Catherine.

Daniel and Edwin both reacted when Sloan showed them remotely.

Catherine Mercer was their older sister.

That meant Anna was not simply Richard Vale's daughter.

She was also a Mercer by blood.

Daniel and Edwin were her maternal uncles.

The overlapping families were no accident.

They were the reason identities had been manipulated so aggressively.

Vale's child with Evelyn Price produced Thomas.

Vale's child with Catherine Mercer produced Anna.

Thomas and Anna were half siblings.

Anna was also tied directly to the Mercer family whose records had been exchanged around her.

George looked at the ledger again.

One entry appeared on the date Anna was removed.

A destination.

Not an address.

A surname.

The same surname Anna later used.

George's father had driven her into the life we knew.

Sloan asked whether anything else remained in the box.

One envelope.

Unmarked.

George opened it.

Inside was a single sheet in his father's handwriting.

If Thomas ever finds this, tell him I am sorry. We saved Anna because Catherine made me promise. We left Thomas because Evelyn made me believe he would be safer with her. We were wrong.

Below that:

Thomas learned the truth before Anna did.

And one final line:

If Richard disappears, Thomas will come for the successor.

George read it twice.

"Anna was the successor."

Clara shook her head.

"Was."

She pointed to the trust structure.

"If Anna is gone, succession moves again."

Sloan's financial analyst called less than five minutes later.

They had finally penetrated the Vale Holdings Preservation Trust.

Anna had indeed been the primary successor.

After her death, the trust did not revert to Richard.

It moved to Anna's legally recognized descendants.

If none existed, it passed to Thomas.

George stared at Sloan.

"Does Anna have a child?"

Sloan did not answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

There was one protected birth record attached to Anna's file.

The child's identity had been sealed.

Someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to keep it out of every database search.

Sloan looked at the page.

Then at George.

"The child survived."

George asked the name.

Sloan read it.

The room went silent.

Because it was a name already familiar to every one of us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: Anna’s Hidden Child Turned the Vale Trust Into a Motive for Everything, and Thomas’s Next Message Proved He Already Knew Where the Heir Lived

George stared at the hand in the photograph long after everyone else began talking.
