Rain ticked against the boarded windows, and somewhere behind the kitchen wall an old pipe knocked twice as though the building itself had noticed the fourth man arrive.

George kept both hands visible.

The photograph Richard Vale had placed on the table remained between them. Three Harbor Ridge boys stared up from its faded surface: Daniel, Edwin, Thomas. Elias Reed's handwriting on the back connected each boy to a later name, but from our concealed position we could not read what George was seeing.

Daniel's damaged left wrist hung stiffly beside him.

Edwin's hands were steady.

That difference, more than the old photograph, made the brothers suddenly distinguishable.

Richard Vale said, "Ask him."

George looked at Edwin. "Ask him what?"

"Whatever question brought you here."

George glanced once toward Daniel. "Which one of you let Peter Holt get buried under Edwin's name?"

Daniel's face hardened.

Edwin answered.

"Neither of us buried him."

George waited.

Edwin continued, "Peter was already dead when Vale decided his body could solve a problem."

Vale gave him a warning look.

Edwin ignored it.

Peter Holt had developed a severe infection at Harbor Ridge after an untreated wound. By the time someone finally sent for medical help, he was dying. His death threatened an inquiry because his records showed repeated complaints that had been ignored.

Vale saw an opportunity.

Harbor Ridge needed Peter's death hidden.

The Mercer family needed Edwin Mercer to disappear.

One body solved both problems.

George's voice remained quiet. "Why did Edwin need to disappear?"

This time Edwin looked at Daniel.

"Because I saw what he did."

Daniel took one step forward.

Vale stopped him with a raised hand.

Edwin explained that Daniel had discovered Elias Reed copying records. Daniel was still a boy, but already understood that their father feared exposure more than anything else. Instead of confronting Elias, Daniel stole one of his notebooks and delivered it to their father.

That act set off everything that followed.

Several Harbor Ridge children were moved within days.

Records vanished.

Thomas was transferred under a false surname.

And Edwin, who had seen Daniel take the notebook, threatened to tell Elias.

Their father decided the brothers had become dangerous in different ways.

Daniel was useful.

Edwin was not.

"So they killed you on paper," George said.

Edwin nodded.

Peter Holt became Edwin Mercer in death.

Daniel became Edwin Mercer in life.

The real Edwin became someone else entirely.

George turned the photograph over again.

We could see him reading the third name.

His shoulders tightened.

"What name?" Daniel asked.

George looked up.

"You don't know?"

Daniel's silence answered him.

Richard Vale had withheld Edwin's replacement identity even from Daniel.

That seemed impossible after everything we had learned about their decades of overlapping secrets.

Until Edwin said, "He couldn't tell Daniel because Daniel spent forty years looking for me."

The room changed.

Daniel's expression did not.

But his injured hand closed.

George asked why.

Edwin answered with another question.

"What do you think happened to Thomas?"

We had assumed Thomas had survived under a protected identity.

Elias Reed's pages appeared to prove it.

But Edwin told a different story.

Thomas had escaped Harbor Ridge briefly.

He reached Margaret.

For six days, she hid him.

Then somebody found them.

Margaret survived.

Thomas disappeared again.

No body was ever recovered.

Daniel believed Edwin had helped Thomas escape.

That was why he had spent decades searching for his brother.

Not for reunion.

For information.

George looked toward Vale.

"And you protected Edwin?"

Vale gave a tired smile. "Protection is a generous word."

Edwin's replacement identity had belonged to a child who died in infancy.

Vale arranged documents.

Margaret arranged somewhere for Edwin to live.

Elias Reed supplied proof that could be used if Vale ever betrayed them.

Three adults, none trusting the others, created a balance that lasted for years.

Then Elias died.

Margaret disappeared.

And Edwin went deeper underground.

George tapped the photograph.

"What's the name?"

Edwin finally said it himself.

"Samuel Reed."

My breath caught.

Reed.

George reacted too.

"Marian's family?"

"No blood relation."

Vale had deliberately chosen Elias's surname because any future search would lead investigators toward Reed family records and away from Mercer.

Samuel Reed existed legally.

Edwin Mercer did not.

George asked whether Marian knew.

Edwin shook his head.

"Not until much later."

That contradicted Marian's account.

From our observation point, Sloan leaned closer to the audio receiver.

Edwin continued.

Marian had discovered the truth approximately twelve years ago after finding correspondence among her father's belongings. She contacted Edwin once.

Only once.

Then she made him promise never to approach her again.

George asked why.

"Because someone followed me to her house."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Edwin looked directly at him.

"I thought it was you."

Daniel spoke for the first time since Edwin appeared.

"It wasn't."

The brothers stared at each other.

There was no affection in the silence between them.

But there was something more complicated than hatred.

Recognition, perhaps.

Two men who had spent most of their lives shaped by the same machinery, each convinced the other had become part of it.

George asked Daniel, "Then who followed him?"

Daniel looked toward Vale.

Vale's face changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

George saw it.

"So there is still somebody else."

Vale said, "There has always been somebody else."

Before he could continue, headlights swept briefly across the boards covering the front windows.

Sloan stiffened beside me.

No vehicle was supposed to approach that road.

His team reported nothing over the radio.

The headlights vanished.

Inside, Vale turned toward the front of the building.

Daniel reached beneath his coat.

George immediately stepped backward.

"Don't."

Daniel ignored him.

Edwin moved toward the rear corridor.

Then every light inside the restaurant went out.

For three seconds our audio feed became chaos—shoes scraping, a table striking the floor, George shouting.

Sloan ordered the teams in.

We were already moving.

By the time we reached the side entrance, emergency lights from Sloan's people were cutting through the rain.

George was on the floor behind an overturned table.

Alive.

Daniel was beside the kitchen doorway.

Vale had disappeared.

So had Edwin.

Sloan grabbed George by the shoulder.

"Where?"

"Rear exit."

The wooded access behind the restaurant split into two trails.

Teams followed both.

They found Edwin less than two hundred yards away.

He was kneeling beside the trail.

Blood ran down one side of his face from a shallow cut.

He had not been shot.

He had been struck.

Vale was gone.

George asked Edwin who had attacked him.

Edwin pointed through the trees.

"Not Richard."

Sloan's search teams found fresh tire impressions beyond an old service gate.

Someone had driven directly to a place that should have been inaccessible without knowing the abandoned restaurant's layout.

Daniel remained inside under guard.

When Sloan returned, Daniel surprised everyone by asking for protection.

"From Vale?" Sloan asked.

Daniel shook his head.

"Vale isn't the one you should be afraid of."

"Then give me a name."

Daniel looked toward Edwin.

Edwin looked back.

For the first time, the brothers seemed to agree on something.

Daniel said, "Find Thomas."

George stared at him.

"You said Thomas disappeared."

"I said I never found him."

Edwin slowly stood.

The blood on his cheek had reached his collar.

"Neither did I."

Sloan asked the obvious question.

"If Thomas is alive, why would he attack Vale?"

Edwin wiped his face.

"Because Thomas wasn't the child Harbor Ridge stole the most from."

George looked down at the photograph still clutched in his hand.

Three boys.

Three later names.

But Elias Reed's pages had contained another protected child.

Anna.

And beneath her name, the recovered word:

SUCCESSOR.

Edwin looked at George.

"Thomas spent his whole life believing Anna got the future that was supposed to be his."

A radio call interrupted him.

One of Sloan's officers had found Vale's abandoned vehicle three miles away.

The driver's door was open.

There was blood on the seat.

And on the windshield, traced with a finger through the condensation, was the same crooked moon that had followed us through every stage of the investigation.

Beneath it was one letter.

T.

Click here to continue reading: PART 22: Daniel and Edwin Finally Agreed About Thomas, Until Marian Revealed the Harbor Ridge Photograph Hid a Fourth Child Outside the Frame

Edwin Mercer did not look at his brother when he entered the light.
