Broken windows, boilers, locks, electrical problems.

One night a pipe burst above the records room.

While moving boxes away from the water, he discovered two sets of admission records.

The children’s names did not match.

At first he assumed clerical mistakes.

Then he noticed dates of birth changing.

Parents changing.

Even death records changing.

Harbor Ridge was being used to make children disappear administratively.

Some were placed elsewhere under new identities.

Some were returned to families under another child’s paperwork.

A few simply vanished from the institutional record.

“Mercer ran it?” George asked.

“Mercer benefited from it,” Marian answered. “That’s different.”

Daniel and Edwin were among the children whose identities had been deliberately blurred.

But they were not the beginning.

And Thomas and Anna were not random additions.

Elias began copying records.

Three pages became his safeguard.

The first contained original identities.

The second contained replacement identities.

The third connected both to adults responsible for the changes.

Margaret eventually obtained the pages.

“Why Margaret?” Clara asked.

“Because my father trusted her.”

“Who was she?”

Marian looked at George.

“Thomas’s mother.”

That answered one question and created several more.

Anna was Thomas’s half sister, but Margaret was not Anna’s mother.

Their shared father appeared on the third page.

Marian remembered the name because Margaret had once made her promise never to say it aloud while Daniel Mercer lived.

George asked, “Is Mercer alive?”

Marian’s eyes settled on him.

“I don’t know which Mercer you mean.”

The sentence chilled the room.

Sloan asked her to explain.

Marian said the identities of Daniel and Edwin had been exchanged so often that even Elias eventually stopped trusting official photographs.

Instead, he used physical markers.

Not the crooked moons.

Those had been deliberately copied.

Tattooed.

Sometimes chemically darkened.

The genuine distinction was something else.

One brother had broken his left wrist badly as a child.

The bone healed crooked.

The other had not.

George whispered, “Mercer’s wrist.”

I remembered seeing it.

The slight angle.

The stiffness.

Clara remembered too.

But none of us knew whether that made him Daniel or Edwin.

Marian continued.

After Elias died, Margaret divided the three pages.

She believed keeping them together was too dangerous.

One went to George’s father.

One went to someone named Helen.

George frowned.

“You’re Helen.”

Marian nodded.

“Helen Marian Reed.”

The third went to Anna.

My heart sank.

“Did Anna know what she had?”

“No.”

Margaret concealed it inside something ordinary.

Marian did not know what.

That meant the page could still exist.

Sloan asked about the name of Thomas and Anna’s father.

Marian stared at her hands.

Finally she said it.

“Richard Vale.”

Clara made a small sound.

George went rigid.

Vale had appeared repeatedly around the Mercer history, but always as someone belonging to the past.

Someone dead.

According to Marian, that assumption was wrong.

Richard Vale had been involved in the identity transfers at Harbor Ridge.

He had also fathered Thomas.

Years later, he fathered Anna with another woman.

When Margaret discovered Anna existed, she understood why Vale had suddenly become interested in recovering Harbor Ridge records.

Not because they exposed Mercer.

Because they exposed him.

“Where did Vale die?” I asked.

Marian looked at me.

“He didn’t.”

The room became utterly still.

Sloan asked for proof.

Marian gave him an address.

Not a house.

A private mail facility across the state line.

Elias had instructed her to send a blank birthday card there every January.

No return address.

For decades, nothing happened.

Then, three years earlier, one card came back.

Inside was a handwritten message.

Still watching.

Signed R.V.

Sloan photographed it.

The handwriting would need comparison.

George asked whether Margaret knew Vale survived.

“Yes.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

“Anna?”

Marian shook her head.

Clara asked about the three pages.

Marian stood slowly and requested her walking frame.

She led us to her room.

Inside a dresser was a sewing box.

Beneath spools of thread and packets of needles lay a folded sheet protected by wax paper.

The second page.

Replacement identities.

Sloan unfolded it carefully.

Daniel Mercer’s line showed:

DANIEL MERCER → EDWIN MERCER.

Below it:

THOMAS — surname withheld.

And farther down:

ANNA — protected / V.

George exhaled.

“This proves Clara was right.”

“Partly,” Marian said.

She pointed to a faint pencil mark beside Daniel’s entry.

REVERSED.

Clara stared.

“What does that mean?”

“I never knew.”

Sloan’s phone rang.

He stepped into the hall.

When he returned, his face had changed.

His team had searched George’s father’s stored papers.

They found the first page.

Anna’s belongings, preserved among material already collected during the investigation, contained the third.

All three Harbor Ridge pages now existed in one place for the first time in decades.

Sloan ordered them compared immediately.

The result came that evening.

One name appeared across all three pages under different identities.

Richard Vale.

And beside his final known identity was an address.

Current.

Not historical.

Sloan checked it.

The property was occupied.

Security footage from a nearby road showed an elderly man entering it three days earlier.

Facial comparison was imperfect but persuasive.

Richard Vale was alive.

Then Sloan showed us the second figure captured beside him.

George stopped breathing for a moment.

I recognized the man too.

Mercer.

The same Mercer whose identity we had spent days trying to untangle.

Alive.

Walking beside Richard Vale.

And neither man looked like a prisoner.
