using?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan\u2019s answer landed like another floor disappearing beneath me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur Rowan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth stood so quickly her chair fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Her face had lost all color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her old photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Real Richard Vale.<\/p>\n<p>A dead boy who apparently survived.<\/p>\n<p>A man photographed years later under my grandfather\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>She whispered:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that was Richard\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood before she finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Arthur Rowan wasn\u2019t your father\u2019s real name either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family tree in my head collapsed entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Sloan picked up the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need DNA.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you thinking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then answered because by now there was no useful gentle version.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the man who raised Elizabeth as Arthur Rowan was actually Richard Vale, then your father\u2014Thomas Mercer\u2014and your maternal grandfather grew up together at Harbor Ridge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anna whispered, \u201cAnd one stole the other\u2019s identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly more than one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth pressed both hands against the table.<\/p>\n<p>I looked from her to the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Two teenage boys.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Years later one became Richard Ross.<\/p>\n<p>The other may have become Arthur Rowan.<\/p>\n<p>Both entered my mother\u2019s life under names that did not belong to them.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Dad\u2019s confession again.<\/p>\n<p>Your father\u2019s money corrupted everything.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had not only meant Elizabeth\u2019s father.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he meant the boy he once knew.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the entire theft had not begun when Dad saw hidden accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it began decades earlier, father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich Richard?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sloan\u2019s eyes shifted toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father Richard Ross.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWritten two weeks before Linden Street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Then read the first line
