The ledger my mother mentioned was apparently not among Martin’s records, but the files helped explain why Mercer might still care.

Property after property had passed through companies linked to Dad and Mercer. Some were later sold to the city at enormous profit. Others became sites for commercial development after zoning changes that had seemed inexplicable at the time.

Then Anna found a familiar address.

“That’s Samuel Price’s house.”

The reporter.

Three months after his death, the property had transferred to a Mercer subsidiary.

I read the sale price.

Less than half its assessed value.

“Why would Mercer buy his house?”

“To search it legally,” Clara said.

The sentence chilled me.

They had not merely eliminated problems. Dad had turned the space behind it into a shallow utility cupboard.

I crouched.

At first I saw nothing.

Then, near the baseboard, faint beneath layers of polish and years of wear, curved a blue line.

The crooked moon.

My throat tightened.

“You remember now?” Anna asked.

“Yes.”

I ran my fingertips along the here.”

“That was different.”

“Was it?”

I looked closer.

One section of molding had a gap barely wider than a fingernail.

I pushed a key into it.

The trim loosened.

Behind it was a narrow cavity.

Inside lay a plastic-wrapped object.

Neither of us breathed.

I pulled it out.

A toward the kitchen.

I tucked the ledger beneath my jacket.

We moved silently.

Halfway across the dining room, a man appeared at the top of the staircase.

I had
