hundreds of miles away.

And armed men were already at the gate.

Ruiz’s voice came through my earpiece.

“Stay inside.”

Gunfire cracked outside.

Clara gripped the Halcyon token.

Rebecca turned toward a side hall.

“Basement.”

“Why?”

“Old fire tunnel.”

Martin stared.

“It was sealed.”

“I reopened it.”

Adrian looked at her.

“When?”

“After Mother died.”

Of course she had.

Rebecca had spent twenty-three years studying the house where her mother was trapped.

She was never going to let a locked door decide another outcome.

We moved.

Ruiz shouted through the earpiece for us to stay.

I ignored him.

The side hall ended at the blackened fireplace.

Rebecca pressed a hidden latch.

Stone shifted.

Behind it was a narrow stairway.

Smoke had stained the original walls.

Clara stopped.

“This is where Margaret tried to escape.”

Rebecca nodded.

“No.”

“This is where she could have escaped if Martin had questioned one order.”

Martin’s face broke again.

Rebecca descended.

We followed.

At the bottom, the tunnel divided.

One route toward woods.

One toward an underground chamber.

Rebecca went to the chamber.

“Why are we stopping?”

“Because there is something Clara needs to see before she chooses.”

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“Not now.”

Rebecca pulled free.

“Especially now.”

She opened a steel door.

Inside were shelves of original Harrington files.

And one large photograph pinned to the wall.

My father.

My mother.

Martin.

Peter.

Margaret Harrington.

Together.

Years before Margaret died.

Clara stepped closer.

“They all knew each other.”

“Yes,” Rebecca said.

“Before Harrington Industrial?”

“Before everything you’ve been told.”

My heart sank.

“What is this?”

Rebecca handed Clara a document.

At the top was a title.

KITCHEN TABLE PROTOCOL.

Dated thirty years ago.

Before Mercer Holdings.

Before Clara and I met.

Before Margaret’s death.

The names beneath it were signatures.

Thomas Mercer.

Elaine Mercer.

Martin Keene.

Margaret Harrington.

Peter Lawson.

And Evelyn Vance.

I stared at the final signature.

Evelyn had claimed she knew nothing about my parents’ deeper role.

She had lied.

Again.

But Clara was looking lower.

At one additional signature beneath all the others.

Someone who was supposed to have been a child at the time.

Samuel’s daughter.

Rebecca Harrington.

She had signed too.

The date made that impossible.

Rebecca would have been fourteen.

I looked at her.

“How old were you when this was signed?”

“Fourteen.”

“What exactly did they make you part of?”

Rebecca’s face changed.

For the first time, the controlled woman from the hospital looked frightened.

“They didn’t make me part of it.”

She looked at the gunfire echoing faintly above us.

“I created it.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: Rebecca Said She Created the Protocol at Fourteen, but the First Rule Proved
