panicked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I said no to babysitting?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you were leaving me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was sitting in my bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were already leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool. Work. Clinicals. You didn\u2019t need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought needing you was the same as loving you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia shut her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Not money.<\/p>\n<p>Not entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Need.<\/p>\n<p>She had built relationships around usefulness because usefulness felt safer than affection.<\/p>\n<p>If people needed her, they could not leave.<\/p>\n<p>If they became independent, she experienced it as rejection.<\/p>\n<p>My refusal to babysit was not merely inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>It was evidence that her system was failing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad asked the question none of us had.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you mean it when you told Maya to leave?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor about ten seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second you started packing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the look on her face.<\/p>\n<p>Not satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>Alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Then she had tried to regain control.<\/p>\n<p>Come inside.<\/p>\n<p>Your father will be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>Do not expect things to go back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted you to apologize,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor making me feel unnecessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The absurdity of it nearly took my breath.<\/p>\n<p>I had been expected to apologize for becoming an adult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would have happened if I had?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou would have stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would have found another way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep it from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>That answer closed something.<\/p>\n<p>Not healed.<\/p>\n<p>Closed.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict had never been about whether I deserved the money.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia knew I did.<\/p>\n<p>It was about what access to that money represented.<\/p>\n<p>Choice.<\/p>\n<p>Distance.<\/p>\n<p>A life she could not regulate.<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyer finally intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should discuss proposed terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The emotional part of the meeting ended.<\/p>\n<p>Paper returned.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Property.<\/p>\n<p>Repayment.<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked at Cynthia once before Evelyn began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou loved us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia looked startled.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears returned to her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you loved being necessary more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Dad removed the wedding ring he had been carrying in his pocket since the investigator interviews.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it on the table between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t stay married to someone who needed me dependent in order to feel secure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia stared at the ring.<\/p>\n<p>She did not beg.<\/p>\n<p>She simply nodded.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, Dad\u2019s choice was not a compromise designed to keep everyone near him.<\/p>\n<p>It was a boundary.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31998\">Click here to continue reading: PART 26: The Settlement Numbers Forced Cynthia to Face What \u201cLater\u201d Had Cost, While Brandon Made a Choice That Finally Broke Her Old System<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nobody spoke after Cynthia said yes.
