Not a voice we get to use now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pressed the elevator button.<\/p>\n<p>After a moment he said, \u201cI\u2019m proud of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was different.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elevator opened.<\/p>\n<p>Before we stepped inside, Evelyn came down the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>She was holding her phone.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression told me something had happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCynthia is gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe failed to appear for a scheduled interview.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean she\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer lawyer cannot reach her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer vehicle was found at Samantha\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere\u2019s Samantha?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso unavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe.
