Earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore my birthday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat you were opening some school account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat school account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly did she ask?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said, \u2018Sign here so Maya doesn\u2019t have to come back downstairs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the table.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded exactly like Cynthia.<\/p>\n<p>Casual.<\/p>\n<p>Practical.<\/p>\n<p>No reason to question it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you home with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see me sign anything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did you witness my signature?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, it isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI signed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou signed something without reading it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s exactly what Dad did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence landed painfully.<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<p>Same weakness.<\/p>\n<p>Different generation.<\/p>\n<p>Trust replacing attention.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon, this is Evelyn Hart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not discuss this document with your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have any texts from around that period where she asked you to sign paperwork?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreserve your phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not delete anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the call, Marcus continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe witness signature made the document appear more credible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the bank still rejected it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the primary signature failed comparison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One imperfect loop in the Y.<\/p>\n<p>That was all.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between Cynthia accessing the account and failing.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my forged name.<\/p>\n<p>Then something occurred to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman who went into the branch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Brandon witnessed the mailed form later, those are separate attempts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCynthia kept trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever went into the bank was part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPotentially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn asked Marcus whether branch notes included anything else.<\/p>\n<p>He checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne detail.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe teller noted that the accompanying representative called the customer \u2018Rachel\u2019 once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>No one in our immediate family had that name.<\/p>\n<p>Then Marianne, who had joined the meeting remotely, spoke through Evelyn\u2019s laptop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy cousin has a daughter named Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn asked, \u201cWhose cousin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine and Cynthia\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow old?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-eight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAppearance?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDark hair. About Maya\u2019s height.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes she know Cynthia?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cName?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel Danner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cI\u2019ve met her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamily Christmas. Years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered a woman vaguely.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>Sharp laugh.<\/p>\n<p>Someone Cynthia introduced as a distant relative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould she have known me well enough to impersonate me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marianne looked troubled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not well. But enough to resemble you from a distance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn immediately cautioned us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not contact her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I had learned.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence first.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus said there was one more thing.<\/p>\n<p>A photocopy had been submitted with the mailed request.<\/p>\n<p>My identification.<\/p>\n<p>And a second document.<\/p>\n<p>A notarized limited power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>Purportedly signed by me.<\/p>\n<p>The notary was not Patricia.<\/p>\n<p>Different name.<\/p>\n<p>Samantha Danner.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt something inside me go cold.<\/p>\n<p>This was no longer one notary quietly helping Cynthia.<\/p>\n<p>Another branch of her family had touched the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Dad whispered, \u201cHow many people knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>The limited power of attorney gave Cynthia authority over my account.<\/p>\n<p>It had been signed three weeks before my twenty-first birthday.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the signature.<\/p>\n<p>Again wrong.<\/p>\n<p>But close.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed the address beneath my name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Dad\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>A different address.<\/p>\n<p>I read it aloud.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Elaine\u2019s old house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>The home had been sold years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Yet someone had used it as my residence on a power of attorney created just before I gained control of my inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn gathered every page.<\/p>\n<p>Marcus agreed to preserve the records and provide certified copies.<\/p>\n<p>As we stood to leave, Dad looked at the forged signature card again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrandon\u2019s going to blame himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should talk to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut don\u2019t tell him his mistake caused this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCynthia asked him to trust her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make what he did smart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the responsibility still belongs where it belongs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He absorbed that.<\/p>\n<p>I realized I had learned that lesson through pain.<\/p>\n<p>Guilt needed edges.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise it spread until everyone carried a piece of the wrong person\u2019s burden.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the bank, Evelyn received a call.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped away.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and I waited beside the elevator.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned, her face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel Danner has an address in the same city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not surprising.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe works for the title company handling the attempted sale of your house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a closing coordinator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The elevator doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody stepped inside.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel was positioned to help close the sale that Cynthia tried to push through before we stopped it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of the teller note.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who may have tried to impersonate me at the bank.<\/p>\n<p>The cousin whose mother notarized a power of attorney.<\/p>\n<p>The employee handling the sale of Dad\u2019s home.<\/p>\n<p>Too many coincidences had begun connecting through one person.<\/p>\n<p>And if Rachel had been involved for years, Cynthia\u2019s plan was no longer something she had improvised after I turned twenty-one.<\/p>\n<p>It had infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Family.<\/p>\n<p>Access.<\/p>\n<p>People in the right places.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31990\">Click here to continue reading: PART 18: Rachel\u2019s Role in the House Sale Looked Like the Missing Link, Until She Walked Into Evelyn\u2019s Office and Asked for Protection<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The bank meeting happened two days later.
