twenty-one.”

I looked at the calendar.

My birthday had been four months earlier.

“What happened then?”

“That is what caught my attention.”

The deposits stopped.

Then, six days after my twenty-first birthday, Cynthia initiated paperwork to close the account.

My pulse jumped.

“Did she?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“The bank rejected the request.”

“Why?”

“Because the beneficiary was now an three months.”

Three months.

Then the argument over babysitting.

The demand that I leave.

The missing records.

The planned house sale.

Evelyn continued.

“Two weeks before the argument, Cynthia requested a new copy of your account signature card.”

I stopped breathing.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

“She was trying to close it.”

“Possibly.”

“Using my signature?”

“We do not know.”

But I understood something else.

Cynthia’s sudden hostility toward my independence had intensified after I turned twenty-one.

Not because twenty-one changed our family emotionally.

Because it changed the paperwork.

I was no longer a child whose accounts could be managed around me.

I had become the person whose signature
