company?”

“Yes.”

My skin prickled.

“What about him?”

Marianne paused.

“He was the one who fired her.”

Dad leaned toward the phone.

“Rebecca said the company blamed poor recordkeeping.”

“That was the public story.”

“What was the private one?”

Marianne exhaled.

“They thought Cynthia and Patricia were creating fake repair vendors and routing payments through them.”

Nobody spoke.

I looked at the current records.

Fake companies.

False account names.

Payments that appeared ordinary until someone checked who actually controlled them.

Not a new strategy.

An old one.

Refined over time.

“Was there an investigation?” Evelyn asked.

“Internal.”

“Police?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Gerald wanted to avoid publicity.”

“Does he have records?”

Marianne went quiet.

“I don’t know.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Last I heard, Florida.”

Evelyn’s assistant was already searching.

Dad stared at the transaction sheet.

“This goes back twenty years.”

Maybe longer.

The thought settled over all of us.

My mother had not encountered a woman who suddenly became dishonest after entering our family.

She may have encountered a pattern already in progress.

And if Gerald Voss had preserved any records from the old management company, we might finally learn whether my mother had been the first person Cynthia took from.

Or simply the first one whose warnings had survived.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Man Who Fired
