Thirty-six, divorced, direct, and almost impossible to shock.<\/p>\n<p>Three weeks earlier she had found me crying in the supply room after Cynthia called during my shift and demanded I leave early to watch Mason.<\/p>\n<p>Beth had not asked why I was crying.<\/p>\n<p>She had handed me a tissue and said, \u201cWrite things down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time I thought she meant my schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Later I realized she meant everything.<\/p>\n<p>I typed:<\/p>\n<p>Can I stay with you tonight? I have my anatomy final in the morning. Long story.<\/p>\n<p>The reply came before I could put the phone away.<\/p>\n<p>Yes. Door\u2019s open. I could hear them against the garage door.<\/p>\n<p>My car was at the clinic because the alternator had died two days earlier. Beth had driven me home after my shift, and I had planned to deal with it after the final.<\/p>\n<p>That meant I had no immediate way to get to her apartment.<\/p>\n<p>I opened a rideshare app.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two minutes.<\/p>\n<p>I could wait outside.<\/p>\n<p>I preferred that to another twenty-two minutes inside.<\/p>\n<p>As I reached for the door, Cynthia spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walk out now, don\u2019t expect everything to go back to normal tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand stopped on the knob.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence deserved an answer.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia stood beside the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>Brandon was near the couch holding Mason.<\/p>\n<p>The baby had finally stopped crying. His cheek rested against his father\u2019s shoulder, unaware that the adults around him had just split something open that had been cracking for years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want it to go back to normal,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>That was the first truth of the evening that seemed to genuinely surprise her.<\/p>\n<p>Normal was Cynthia volunteering my time.<\/p>\n<p>Normal was Brandon benefiting from it.<\/p>\n<p>Normal was Dad coming home after the argument had been cleaned up and hearing a version in which everyone had simply been stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Normal was me apologizing because I hated tension more than Cynthia hated causing it.<\/p>\n<p>I was finished with normal.<\/p>\n<p>She folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father will be extremely disappointed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The old reflex hit immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Dad.<\/p>\n<p>For a second I was twelve again, terrified that he would believe the calmer adult instead of the crying child.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The records.<\/p>\n<p>The screenshots.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph I had taken of the laptop before closing it.<\/p>\n<p>I had evidence now.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, I had something I had never possessed before.<\/p>\n<p>A version of events that did not depend on Cynthia agreeing with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess he\u2019ll decide that himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brandon.<\/p>\n<p>I looked back.<\/p>\n<p>His expression had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at Cynthia.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can drive you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least let me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were going out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t because of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>Cold air hit my face.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Cynthia said, \u201cLet her go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned one final time.<\/p>\n<p>She was smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Barely.<\/p>\n<p>But I saw it.<\/p>\n<p>For years I had wondered whether I was unfair to her, whether grief had made me suspicious, whether I resented her simply because she had married my father after Mom died.<\/p>\n<p>That smile settled something.<\/p>\n<p>She wanted me gone.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely out for the night.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>I walked down the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>My duffel bag pulled against my shoulder. I refused because my anatomy final is tomorrow. She told me to leave. During the argument she pulled my school laptop from my hands and it hit the floor. The screen is broken.
