I had been staring at nerves and muscle attachments so long that the colored lines seemed burned into my vision.

Mason whimpered against Cynthia’s shoulder. He was overtired, cheeks pink, one sock missing. At eleven months old, my nephew had developed a talent for sensing the precise moment an adult desperately needed quiet.

Cynthia bounced him once and said, “Brandon needs you to watch him tonight.”

Not asked.

Needs.

I looked at the clock beside my bed. 7:18 p.m.

“My final is tomorrow morning.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you asking me?”

Her mouth tightened at the word asking.

From downstairs came the faint thump of a cabinet closing, followed by Brandon’s voice. He was apparently searching for something while Cynthia handled the part he did not want to handle himself.

She shifted Mason higher on her hip. “Your brother has plans.”

I waited for the rest.

There wasn’t any.

“What kind of plans?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes.”

Her expression told me I had already chosen the wrong answer.

I closed the anatomy atlas carefully. “If Mason is sick or Brandon has to work, tell me. If there’s an actual emergency, I’ll figure something out.”

“He doesn’t need to justify himself to you.”

“Then I’m not babysitting.”

Mason reached toward the silver zipper on Cynthia’s sweater. She caught his hand without looking down.

“Maya, you live in this house.”

There it was.

The sentence she had been refining for years.

Sometimes it came out as You don’t pay market rent. Delaying the program meant another semester of tuition I could barely afford and months longer before I could begin the clinical sequence I had spent two years trying to reach.

Cynthia knew all of that.

She simply did not consider it important enough to compete with Brandon’s evening.

“Where is he going?”

She exhaled through her nose. “Out.”

“With friends?”

“Maya.”

“So yes.”

Footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Brandon appeared behind her wearing jeans, clean sneakers, and the black jacket he usually saved for bars or dates.
