heat heavy enough to slow the city.

Maya arrived with enough energy to ignore it.

Her promised week in Savannah began on a Sunday afternoon.

Austin carried her suitcase upstairs.

Chloe carried another bag.

I stared at both.

“She is staying seven days.”

Maya said, “Eight.”

“Seven nights.”

“Still.”

I pointed at the luggage.

“Why does she have more clothes than I took across Europe?”

Chloe looked guilty.

“Maya packed.”

“I need options.”

“For what?”

She shrugged.

“Life.”

Austin laughed.

I did not.

By six, her parents were ready to leave.

Maya stood at the blue door waving.

Chloe hugged her three times.

Austin twice.

Then Chloe hugged me.

“Call if you need anything.”

I smiled.

“I have raised a child before.”

“Yes, but that one was Austin.”

“Exactly.”

Austin protested.

Then they left.

Maya watched the car disappear.

For approximately four seconds, she looked sad.

Then she turned.

“Can we get ice cream?”

So began the week.

On Monday, we toured a museum.

Maya complained about walking.

Then complained that I walked too slowly.

We ate lunch near the river.

She wanted a sweatshirt despite the ninety-degree heat because it had SAVANNAH printed across the front.

“Do you need it?”

“No.”

“Do you want it?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have spending money?”

Her face changed.

“Dad gave me forty dollars.”

“How much is the sweatshirt?”

“Forty-eight.”

“Then you don't have enough.”

She stared at me.

“You have eight dollars.”

“Yes.”

I waited.

“Can I borrow it?”

“What's your repayment plan?”

Her mouth fell open.

“You're serious?”

“Deeply.”

“I’m eleven.”

“Almost.”

She crossed her arms.

“Grandmas are supposed to buy things.”

“Who told you?”

“Everyone.”

I laughed.

Eventually she put the sweatshirt back.

Ten minutes later, she found a postcard for two dollars.

She bought that instead.

On the walk home, she said, “I'm glad I didn't buy the sweatshirt.”

“Why?”

“It was ugly.”

“It was.”

“Why didn't you say that?”

“You wanted it.”

“You could've saved me.”

I looked at her.

“I did.”

She frowned.

“How?”

“I let you keep your money.”

She thought about that.

“Grandma?”

“Yes?”

“You make everything into a lesson now.”

I laughed so hard I had to stop walking.

“Fair criticism.”

Tuesday was quieter.

We baked cookies.

Played cards.

Maya beat me repeatedly and became unbearable.

That evening, she video-called Austin.

He asked whether she was behaving.

“Mostly.”

“Grandma says everything is a lesson.”

Austin laughed.

“She's making up for lost time.”

I pointed at the screen.

“Do not encourage her.”

After the call, Maya became subdued.

I noticed but did not press.

At bedtime, she asked if she could sleep with me.

“You have purple sheets.”

“I know.”

“Expensive purple sheets.”

“Please?”

That word changed the answer.

“All right.”

She climbed into my bed.

For several minutes she lay silently.

Then asked, “Did Grandpa know he was going to die?”

I stared into the dark.

Sometimes children saved their largest questions for bedtime because darkness made adults less intimidating.

“He knew he was very sick.”

“But did he know?”

“I think he understood it might happen soon.”

“Did you?”

“I knew.”

“Were you scared?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell him?”

“Sometimes.”

“What did he say?”

I smiled sadly.

“Usually something practical.”

“Like what?”

“That I knew where the insurance papers were.”

Maya giggled.

“That sounds like Grandpa.”

“Yes.”

Then she asked, “Was he scared?”

“I think so.”

“He told Dad he wasn't.”

I turned toward her.

“When?”

“Before he died.”

I did not know that.

“What exactly did he say?”

“Dad asked if he was scared, and Grandpa said he was mostly annoyed.”

I laughed softly.

That also sounded like Ernest.

Maya went quiet.

Then said, “Dad cries sometimes.”

“I know.”

“He thinks I don't see.”

I waited.

“He goes in the garage.”

“What do you do?”

“Nothing.”

“That might be okay.”

“I want to help.”

There it was.

The family instinct.

Already growing.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“Maybe you don't have to fix it.”

“I know.”

She sounded annoyed.

Apparently she had heard that phrase before.

I touched her hair.

“You can hug him.”

“I do.”

“Sit with him.”

“I do.”

“Tell him you miss Grandpa too.”

“I do.”

“Then you're helping.”

She thought.

“That's not fixing.”

“No.”

“Then what's the point?”

I almost laughed.

Not because the question was funny.

Because generations of our family had built entire financial systems around the same confusion.

“The point is he doesn't have to be sad alone.”

Maya absorbed that.

Then rolled onto her side.

Within minutes, she slept.

I remained awake.

Austin crying in the garage.

That image hurt.

He had changed so much that sometimes I forgot change did not erase grief.

The next morning, I considered telling him Maya had mentioned it.

Then decided against it.

Her confidence belonged to her.

Wednesday brought the first real conflict.

Maya wanted to invite a girl she had met next door into the courtyard.

I said yes.

Then the invitation became a sleepover.

I said no.

“Why?”

“Because I don't know her parents.”

“Evelyn knows them.”

“I don't.”

“That's dumb.”

I looked at her.

“Try again.”

She folded her arms.

“It's unfair.”

“Better.”

“Dad would let me.”

“Call him.”

She did.

I expected Austin to support me.

He surprised both of us.

“That's Grandma's decision.”

Maya stared at the phone.

“But—”

“Her house.”

“But you let Sophie sleep over.”

“At our house.”

She looked betrayed.

“This family is obsessed with houses.”

I covered my mouth to keep from laughing.

Afterward, she stomped upstairs.

Door slammed.

I almost followed.

Then stopped.

Anger was not danger.

She could have it.

Twenty minutes later she came down.

“Sorry.”

“For?”

“Slamming the door.”

“Thank you.”

“Can Lucy stay until nine?”

“Let me speak to her parents.”

Negotiation.

Not surrender.

By Thursday, we had found a rhythm.

Breakfast late.

One planned activity.

Afternoons quiet.

Evenings in the courtyard.

Maya watered the magnolia though I suspected she was drowning it.

Friday morning, I discovered her sitting at the kitchen table with my phone.

“What are you doing?”

She froze.

“I wasn't—”

“Maya.”

She placed it down.

On the screen was a shopping website.

A tablet.

Expensive.

Very expensive.

I stared at her.

“What is this?”

Her eyes filled immediately.

“I just wanted to look.”

“Why on my phone?”

“Because Dad said no.”

That answered everything.

“So you thought I might say yes.”

She looked down.

“Maya.”

“Maybe.”

Anger rose.

Not at the tablet.

At the strategy.

Grandma as alternative financing.

The old structure appearing in miniature.

I sat opposite her.

“Look at me.”

She did.

“You knew your father said no.”

“Yes.”

“And you came to me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you can afford it.”

There it was.

Same logic.

Different generation.

I felt suddenly tired.

“Your father could probably afford many things he doesn't buy.”

“But yours isn't the same.”

“What isn't?”

“Your money.”

I stared.

“What do you mean?”

“You have lots.”

Children overheard everything.

More than adults imagined.

“Who told you?”

“Nobody.”

“Maya.”

“I heard Mom and Dad.”

“What did they say?”

“That you could buy houses without loans.”

True.

“And?”

“That you have enough money forever.”

Not exactly true, but close enough from an eleven-year-old perspective.

“So you thought that means I should buy the tablet.”

She shrugged.

“Maybe.”

I sat back.

A year earlier, I might have blamed Austin.

Then Chloe.

Then myself.

Instead, I looked at the child in front of me.

She was testing a system.

Children did that.

“What happens when your parents say no?”

“I don't get it.”

“Correct.”

“But—”

“No.”

Her face hardened.

“You don't even know why I want it.”

“Tell me.”

“For drawing.”

She showed me an app.

Digital art.

Her school had tablets, but limited access.

She wanted to practice.

A real reason.

Not merely greed.

That complicated things.

“How long have you wanted one?”

“Months.”

“Have you saved anything?”

“Seventy-three dollars.”

“Price?”

“Four hundred eighty.”

I nodded.

“What if we make a plan?”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What kind?”

“You save.”

“That'll take
