minutes late.

By ten in the morning, I had stopped pretending this surprised me.

Marjorie sat on the stone bench in the courtyard holding two coffees and offering commentary each time another wrapped piece of furniture came through the blue door.

“That sofa is too large.”

“It fit in Miami.”

“This isn't Miami.”

“I have noticed.”

“Your dining table is too large too.”

“Would you like to go home?”

“No.”

She handed me coffee.

“I'm enjoying myself.”

The townhouse smelled of floor cleaner, cardboard and the faint dusty odor old houses produced when their windows had been closed too long.

Mine.

I kept testing the word.

Not ours.

Not Ernest's and mine.

Not the family house.

Mine.

That distinction felt exhilarating for approximately ten minutes at a time.

Then guilt would arrive and sit beside it.

The movers carried in one of Ernest's bookcases.

I watched them position it against the living-room wall.

For forty years, that bookcase had followed us from one home to another.

Ernest had assembled it when Austin was small.

Badly.

One shelf still tilted slightly.

I had considered replacing it.

Instead, I had paid people to move a crooked piece of furniture across state lines.

Marjorie noticed me staring.

“Don't say anything.”

“I wasn't.”

“You were preparing to.”

“I was going to say it looks terrible there.”

“Thank you.”

“It looks sentimental.”

“Worse.”

She smiled.

“Keep it.”

By afternoon, boxes filled every room.

I had imagined the house transformed immediately.

Instead, it looked as if a cardboard manufacturer had exploded.

The movers left.

The silence afterward was startling.

No Austin.

No Maya.

No Chloe.

No ship engines beneath the floor.

No Ernest calling from another room.

Just the refrigerator humming and somebody's dog barking beyond the courtyard wall.

Marjorie stood with her handbag.

“You want me to stay?”

My first instinct was yes.

My second was pride.

The third was honesty.

“For dinner.”

“Good answer.”

We ordered Thai food because neither of us could locate a saucepan.

We ate from cartons at my too-large dining table.

At eight, Marjorie drove back toward Charleston.

She hugged me at the door.

“Call if you hate it.”

“I won't hate it.”

“Call if you love it.”

“That seems unnecessary.”

“Call either way.”

Then she left.

I closed the blue door.

Locked it.

Turned around.

The house changed.

During the day, it had been a project.

Now it was a home containing one person.

Me.

I walked through each room switching off lights.

In the guest room, Maya's purple sheets remained inside unopened packaging.

I had bought them.

With stars.

I had lost that negotiation before it began.

The study held boxes of photographs and papers.

The living room held the bookcase.

My bedroom held the bed from Miami.

That was where I stopped.

Same mattress.

Same headboard.

Different room.

For one disorienting second, I expected Ernest's slippers beside the bed.

They were not there.

I sat.

The quiet became heavy.

“Here we are,” I said.

Nobody answered.

I had talked to Ernest across oceans.

Why did speaking to him inside my own house suddenly feel stranger?

Perhaps because travel had made loneliness temporary.

Every cabin came with a departure date.

This room did not.

I unpacked his mug.

Placed it in the kitchen cupboard.

Then took it back out.

I stared at it.

For nearly a year, the mug had traveled in my carry-on as though it were fragile evidence that my marriage had happened.

Now it was chipped.

Ordinary.

A mug.

I washed it and left it beside the sink.

My phone rang.

Austin.

“Alive?”

“Barely.”

“How's the house?”

“Full of boxes.”

“That's usually how moving works.”

“I raised an unpleasant child.”

“You did.”

I could hear Maya behind him.

“Put Grandma on video!”

His face disappeared.

Maya's appeared.

“Show me my room.”

“The guest room.”

“My room.”

“The guest room.”

“Show me.”

I walked upstairs.

She gasped when she saw the unopened sheets.

“You bought them!”

“I made a serious error.”

“Put them on.”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Grandma.”

“I have been moving since seven.”

Austin appeared behind her.

“Leave her alone.”

“I need to see.”

“You'll see when we visit.”

“When?”

I looked at Austin.

He shrugged.

“We're checking schedules.”

Old me might have produced a date immediately.

Instead, I said, “We'll plan it.”

Maya accepted that reluctantly.

After she left the screen, Austin asked, “Really okay?”

I looked around the room.

“Yes.”

“Lonely?”

“Yes.”

He waited.

“I think that's allowed.”

“Yeah.”

“Don't drive here.”

“I wasn't going to.”

“You considered it.”

“Maybe.”

I smiled.

“Stay home.”

“Okay.”

Another change.

A year ago, if I admitted loneliness, Austin might have treated it as evidence that I could not manage.

Now he allowed the feeling without trying to eliminate it.

After we hung up, I made the bed.

Then I found one saucepan.

Victory.

I made tea.

Sat in the courtyard beneath the magnolia.

Night insects moved through the warm air.

Somewhere beyond the wall, neighbors laughed.

I knew none of them.

That felt frightening.

Also promising.

The next morning, I woke at six.

For several seconds, I did not know where I was.

Then sunlight reached through unfamiliar curtains.

Savannah.

My house.

I made coffee.

Without thinking, I poured it into Ernest's mug.

I almost changed cups.

Then didn't.

Objects did not require ceremonies every time I touched them.

I carried the mug into the courtyard.

A woman appeared over the adjoining wall.

Not literally over it.

Her face rose above the brick because she was standing on something.

“Hello.”

I nearly spilled coffee.

“Hello.”

“Sorry. I'm trimming jasmine.”

She held pruning shears.

“I’m Evelyn.”

“Theresa.”

“You're the new owner.”

“That seems to be the rumor.”

“Need anything?”

The question made me laugh.

Evelyn looked confused.

“Sorry.”

“Inside joke.”

“With yourself?”

“Mostly.”

She smiled.

“I have a ladder, drill, plumber I trust and absolutely no interest in lending money.”

I stared.

“That is an unusually specific introduction.”

“The last owner borrowed constantly.”

“Money?”

“Tools.”

“Ah.”

“She returned most.”

“Most?”

“Never lend her a ten-millimeter socket.”

“I'll remember.”

Evelyn disappeared behind the wall.

Five seconds later her voice returned.

“There's a neighborhood supper Thursday.”

“Where?”

“My courtyard.”

“Should I bring anything?”

“No.”

I almost argued.

Then caught myself.

“Thank you.”

Progress.

That afternoon, I began unpacking books.

Mine first.

Then Ernest's.

His notes appeared in margins.

On one history book, he had written:

Author is confidently wrong.

I laughed aloud.

Another contained a grocery receipt from nine years earlier.

Milk.

Eggs.

Coffee.

Bananas.

Life preserved accidentally.

I placed the receipt in a drawer.

Not everything needed framing.

By Thursday, the house was beginning to look inhabited.

The too-large dining table remained.

Marjorie was right.

I listed it for sale.

A young couple bought it.

When they carried it out, I unexpectedly cried.

Ernest and I had eaten thousands of meals at that table.

Austin had done homework there.

Maya had once fallen asleep beneath it during Thanksgiving.

The young woman noticed my face.

“We can leave it.”

“No.”

I wiped my eyes.

“Take it.”

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

They carried it through the blue door.

I watched the empty space afterward.

Memory did not leave with the furniture.

That was becoming a pattern.

Thursday evening, I went next door.

Evelyn's neighborhood supper included nine people and enough food for thirty.

I brought nothing.

That required discipline.

Nobody knew I had been married forty years.

Nobody knew my husband had died.

Nobody knew about Austin's debts, Chloe's ring request, my cruise or the sold house.

I was simply Theresa.

When Evelyn introduced me, a man named Walter asked, “What brought you to Savannah?”

I nearly answered widowhood.

Then stopped.

“I wanted to live here.”

That was enough.

Later, walking home, I realized I had gone almost three hours without mentioning Ernest.

The realization produced guilt so fast I stopped on the sidewalk.

Three hours.

Forty years together.

Dead barely more than a year.

And I had laughed.

Eaten pie.

Talked about local restaurants.

Forgotten grief temporarily.

I stood beneath a streetlamp feeling disloyal.

Then I became angry.

At whom, I wasn't sure.

Ernest?

Myself?

Death?

I went inside.

His mug sat in the sink.

His books on the shelf.

His ring on my finger.

“You wanted this,” I said.

Silence.

Then I corrected myself.

“No.”

I removed the ring.

“You don't get credit for everything.”

The words sounded harsh.

They were also true.

Ernest had wanted me to live.

But this house was not his achievement.

Neither was the cruise.

Neither was every laugh.

I had spent decades making myself useful to other people.

I was not going to make my independence another gift from my husband.

I set the ring beside the sink.

Not rejection.

Perspective.

The next morning, I put it back on.

Because I wanted to.

Saturday brought my first household problem.

The kitchen sink began leaking.

Water appeared beneath the cabinet.

My immediate instinct was to call Austin.

I actually had the phone in my hand.

Then I stopped.

Austin lived four hours away.

He knew almost nothing about plumbing.

Calling him would accomplish nothing except allowing me to perform helplessness and allowing him to perform rescue.

I knocked on Evelyn's door.

“Plumber?”

She handed me a card.

“Tell him Evelyn sent you.”

“Thank you.”

“He overcharges everyone equally.”

“Excellent.”

The repair cost one hundred eighty dollars.

I paid it.

No drama.

No lesson.

Just plumbing.

That evening, Austin called.

“What did you do today?”

“Paid a plumber.”

“What happened?”

“Leak.”

“You should've called.”

“Why?”

He paused.

“Good point.”

“I considered it.”

“Why didn't you?”

“You're four hours away.”

“I could have told you to call a plumber.”

“I managed that.”

He laughed.

Then said, “I would've liked knowing.”

That was different.

“Next time I'll tell you.”

“After you call the plumber?”

“Yes.”

“Deal.”

There it was again.

Connection without management.

A week later, Austin, Chloe and Maya arrived for their first visit.

Biscuit came too.

Pepper stayed home because nobody was foolish enough to put Pepper in a car for four hours.

Maya exploded through the blue door.

“My room!”

“Guest room!”

She ignored me.

Within minutes, her backpack had colonized the hallway.

Shoes appeared where shoes did not belong.

Biscuit inspected every corner.

Austin carried bags inside.

Then stopped in the living room.

His father's crooked bookcase stood against the wall.

He touched one shelf.

“You kept it.”

“Yes.”

“Dad built this.”

“Badly.”

Austin smiled.

“I helped.”

“That explains it.”

Chloe entered carrying flowers.

“For the house.”

I accepted them.

“Thank you.”

“No hidden request.”

“I wasn't going to ask.”

“You were thinking it.”

“Possibly.”

We laughed.

Dinner was simple.

Nobody asked me to cook everything.

Austin grilled outside.

Chloe made salad.

Maya set the table.

I watched them move around my kitchen.

For a moment, old instinct returned.

Correct.

Organize.

Take over.

Instead, I sat.

Austin noticed.

“Are you sick?”

“I am supervising.”

“From a chair?”

“Executive position.”

He handed me wine.

“Perfect.”

After dinner, Maya dragged me upstairs.

Purple stars covered the guest bed.

“You did it.”

“I did.”

She hugged me.

Then she looked around.

“Where are Grandpa's things?”

The question surprised me.

“Everywhere.”

“Where?”

I showed her.

The books.

The photograph on the dresser.

The old hammer in the study.

The Hawaiian shirt in a closet.

She laughed at that.

“Grandpa wore this?”

“Unfortunately.”

She touched the fabric.

Then asked, “Where is he most?”

I sat on the bed.

“What do you mean?”

“Like which thing has the most Grandpa?”

I looked around.

There was no answer.

Then I tapped my chest.

“Probably here.”

Maya rolled her eyes.

“That’s cheesy.”

“Extremely.”

She thought.

“Maybe the mug.”

“Why?”

“He always had coffee.”

“That’s true.”

She smiled.

Then ran
