know.”

“But we plan it together.”

“Absolutely.”

That felt good.

Not defensive.

Clear.

After dinner, Austin walked me home again.

Halfway there, he said, “I think I did something wrong.”

“What?”

“Marcus.”

“How?”

“I've been checking on him every day.”

I laughed.

“Of course you have.”

“I just want to make sure the transmission works.”

“No. You want evidence your help succeeded.”

He groaned.

“I hate this family analysis thing.”

“Useful, isn't it?”

“So what do I do?”

“Stop checking.”

“That's it?”

“Yes.”

“What if something goes wrong?”

“Then he knows your number.”

Austin thought.

“That feels negligent.”

“It isn't.”

We reached my building.

Before going inside, I said, “Your father did this too.”

“What?”

“After helping someone, he wanted updates.”

“Seriously?”

“Constantly.”

“That makes me feel better.”

“It shouldn't.”

He laughed.

Then hugged me.

“Goodnight, Mom.”

“Goodnight.”

In the apartment, I opened my laptop.

The Savannah listing remained bookmarked.

I stared at the balcony.

The small kitchen.

The second bedroom.

Iris had sent projected costs.

Affordable.

Manageable.

Mine, if I wanted it.

I closed the laptop.

Not tonight.

For once, wanting something did not require immediate proof.

The next morning, I woke to a message from the realtor.

Another offer had been submitted.

If I wanted the condominium, I would have to decide by noon.

I read the message twice.

Old urgency rose instantly.

Buy it before someone else does.

Protect the option.

Secure the future.

I made coffee.

Sat by the window.

Called nobody.

At eleven-forty, I sent my answer.

Let them have it.

The realtor responded almost immediately.

Are you sure?

No, I wrote.

But I'm not buying a home because a clock frightened me.

I put down the phone.

The loss hurt.

That surprised me.

I had liked the place.

Maybe I had loved the possibility.

But the pain did not mean the decision was wrong.

Some choices were not between good and bad.

Sometimes they were between wanting something and wanting to choose it freely.

That afternoon, Austin stopped by.

“You didn't get the condo?”

“No.”

“Someone outbid you?”

“I didn't bid.”

“Why?”

I told him.

He looked disappointed for me.

“I'm sorry.”

“Me too.”

“You could have afforded it.”

I raised an eyebrow.

He caught himself.

“Right.”

We both laughed.

Then he said, “You'll find another.”

“Probably.”

“And if you don't?”

“I'll rent.”

“You hate renting.”

“I used to hate uncertainty more.”

He leaned against the counter.

“You really changed.”

“So did you.”

“Still changing.”

“Yes.”

Then he looked at me carefully.

“Mom?”

“What?”

“If you never find the perfect place, don't move here just because it's easy.”

I stared at him.

“That isn't a very good sales pitch for Atlanta.”

“I want you here.”

“I know.”

“But I don't want to become your reason again.”

The sentence touched something deep.

Not because he rejected me.

Because he understood.

“I won't.”

He nodded.

And for the first time, I believed both of us.

Click
