Either I&#39;m dead, which is inconvenient, or Theresa finally cleaned something, which is less likely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin laughed through tears.<\/p>\n<p>I slapped his arm.<\/p>\n<p>The recording went quiet for a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ernest&#39;s tone changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t have instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iris looked at us.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us moved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ve left too many already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>He knew.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI only want to say this while I can still say it in my own voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Static crackled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo my wife: you were never valuable because you took care of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest broke open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo my son: you were never a disappointment because you needed help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin lowered his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe simply got those two facts confused too often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I reached for Austin&#39;s hand.<\/p>\n<p>He took mine.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest breathed audibly on the tape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheresa, stop proving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustin, start believing you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin squeezed my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd both of you, for God&#39;s sake, leave each other some room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recording clicked.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ernest&#39;s voice returned faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, and if either of you spends money trying to preserve that ridiculous mountain property, I will haunt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tape ended.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, none of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then Austin laughed.<\/p>\n<p>I did too.<\/p>\n<p>We laughed until crying and laughing became indistinguishable.<\/p>\n<p>Iris quietly left the room.<\/p>\n<p>Austin and I remained at the table holding hands.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he said, \u201cHe really knew us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think we finally got it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>At the man who had once left animals on my porch because he assumed my time belonged to him.<\/p>\n<p>The man now paying his own debts, raising his daughter, repairing cabinets with his father&#39;s screwdriver and learning how to ask without expecting.<\/p>\n<p>Then I thought of myself.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who once measured love by exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>Who sold her house and crossed an ocean because she could not imagine changing while standing still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we&#39;re getting it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s probably all he expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the silent cassette player.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Ernest&#39;s final message did not leave another question.<\/p>\n<p>No hidden condition.<\/p>\n<p>No mystery.<\/p>\n<p>No task.<\/p>\n<p>Just room.<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed Austin&#39;s hand once and released it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLunch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho&#39;s paying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy treat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my handbag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow that is a miracle your father would have wanted to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31922\">Click here to continue reading: PART 21: After Hearing Ernest\u2019s Voice Again, Austin Tried to Repay an Old Debt and Learned That Helping Someone Could Become Another Kind of Control<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday morning, Austin picked me up at eight.
