it was again.

The permission death had seemed to create.

Rules ended.

Promises weakened.

Restraint dissolved.

I sat slowly.

“Did Chloe know you talked to him?”

“No.”

“Does she know now?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I haven't told her.”

I looked at him.

The irony was so obvious neither of us needed to say it.

He had spent months furious at Chloe for hiding financial truth.

Now he was hiding a truth of his own.

Austin saw it in my face.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

He looked exhausted.

“Tell her.”

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“Good.”

“I’m scared.”

“I know.”

“She'll think I’m a hypocrite.”

“You are.”

“Thanks.”

“You can also stop being one.”

He smiled despite himself.

Then nodded.

When the call ended, I remained still for a long time.

Ernest’s last conversation with our son had changed my memory of the day he died.

Not completely.

The hospital room remained ours.

His final breath remained mine to witness.

But now there was another scene before it.

A father calling his son.

Trying one last time to tell him who he could become.

And warning him not to turn his mother into proof of love.

I walked to the small shelf where the music box sat.

I turned the handle.

The thin melody filled the cabin.

Then I whispered, “He told me.”

The next morning, a message from Austin waited on my phone.

I told Chloe everything.

I stared at it.

A second message arrived.

She’s furious.

Then a third.

But she stayed.

I smiled.

Not because anger was good.

Because truth had finally survived the night.
