It&#39;ll only delay the moment you find out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Finally she whispered, \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Austin did not call.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>I did not call them.<\/p>\n<p>At midnight, a message arrived from Austin.<\/p>\n<p>She told me everything.<\/p>\n<p>I typed:<\/p>\n<p>I&#39;m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>He answered:<\/p>\n<p>Me too.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>We&#39;re not asking you to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at those words.<\/p>\n<p>Not asking you to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>A year earlier, such a sentence would have frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>Now it felt like evidence of something growing.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, another message came.<\/p>\n<p>We&#39;re going back to counseling.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Chloe:<\/p>\n<p>No more secret accounts. No more secret help. I&#39;m sorry.<\/p>\n<p>I answered:<\/p>\n<p>Start from here.<\/p>\n<p>Three words.<\/p>\n<p>The same ones I had given her months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>This time, she replied:<\/p>\n<p>I will.<\/p>\n<p>Later that afternoon, I stood at the railing as the ship moved toward another horizon.<\/p>\n<p>My voyage was entering its final stretch.<\/p>\n<p>I had once imagined that by now I would have answers.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I had better questions.<\/p>\n<p>Where would I live?<\/p>\n<p>Who was I without Ernest?<\/p>\n<p>How close could I remain to Austin without becoming responsible for him again?<\/p>\n<p>Could Chloe change?<\/p>\n<p>Could I?<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>A message from Iris.<\/p>\n<p>Call me when you can.
