That is why Ernest made me promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens in three days?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Austin reaches ninety days without requesting money or financial rescue from you, I send you the document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if he asks tomorrow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe second condition resets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the six-month condition already happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo why haven&#39;t you sent it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Ernest added one final instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted you to choose whether you were ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The anger drained away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wrote that the document could change how you see him, Austin, and some decisions made during the last year of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he do something illegal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDishonest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn&#39;t characterize it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you recommend?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recommend you finish reading Ernest\u2019s letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I did.<\/p>\n<p>The final paragraph was short.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa, if you want the document, ask for it only when you are prepared to learn something without immediately trying to fix everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>I read that sentence three times.<\/p>\n<p>Then I looked at the ocean beyond my balcony.<\/p>\n<p>For most of my life, learning that someone I loved was in trouble had sent me running.<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Advice.<\/p>\n<p>Intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>Action had been my defense against uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>Ernest, apparently, had designed one final test.<\/p>\n<p>Could I know there was a problem without immediately putting myself at its center?<\/p>\n<p>I called Iris back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That made her laugh softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat may be the most convincing answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t send it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the ninety days are complete, tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if Austin asks for money before then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll tell you that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>For three days, I thought about almost nothing else.<\/p>\n<p>On the second day, Austin called.<\/p>\n<p>My heart immediately accelerated.<\/p>\n<p>We spoke about Maya.<\/p>\n<p>Work.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Then his voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, there\u2019s something I need to ask you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Eighty-nine days.<\/p>\n<p>One day short.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>And for one terrible second, I understood exactly how fragile change could be.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31908\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: One Day Before Ernest\u2019s Secret Could Be Revealed, Austin Asked Me for Something That Sounded Exactly Like the Old Life<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Austin sounded tired when he answered.
