Our desk drawers had been filled with paper because Ernest believed a thing was not truly documented until it existed somewhere outside a screen.

I imagined showing him Austin’s picture.

“Look,” I would have said.

And Ernest would have smiled in that restrained way he had when hope frightened him.

“He did it himself,” he might have replied.

That detail mattered.

Austin had done it himself.

I sent back three words.

Proud of you.

He answered with a thumbs-up.

Two hours later, he sent another message.

That means a lot.

I sat in the small café near the ship’s atrium and read those words twice.

The woman I had been six months earlier might have celebrated by sending money.

A promotion deserved a gift.

A gift became a transfer.

A transfer became another invisible beam holding up his life.

Instead, I bought a postcard.

On the front was a painted Japanese garden.

On the back, I wrote that Ernest would have been proud too.

Then I mailed it.

That evening Marjorie found me on deck.

“You look pleased with yourself.”

“My son got had become one of those friends acquired accidentally and therefore honestly.

She knew about Austin.

Not every detail.

Enough.

I knew about her sister, Ruth, whose death had left Marjorie angry in a way she had never admitted aloud at home.

We had discovered that grief occasionally made people confess things to strangers because strangers had not known who they were before.

“I’m trying to stop measuring motherhood by how much discomfort I can prevent,” I said.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It
