Maybe you should give her a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had refused because I was having the dock repaired.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Sherry seemed annoyed.<\/p>\n<p>Now I understood.<\/p>\n<p>They needed physical access.<\/p>\n<p>They never got it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes anyone else have a key?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMine\u2019s at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSherry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaige?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Toby went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad\u2019s old spare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat spare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one hidden at the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Leon kept an emergency key inside an old metal bait box beneath the shed floorboard.<\/p>\n<p>Only family knew.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry might know through Paige.<\/p>\n<p>Grant might know through Toby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it still there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>I had not checked in years.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz said, \u201cNo one goes tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if someone else is going there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not asking permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>She stared back.<\/p>\n<p>Then her expression softened only slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can go together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was different.<\/p>\n<p>By sunset, we were driving toward the lake with two unmarked police vehicles behind us.<\/p>\n<p>Toby rode with me.<\/p>\n<p>The road narrowed through pine trees.<\/p>\n<p>I had not been to the cabin in nearly three months.<\/p>\n<p>As we approached, I felt Leon everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>His truck turning the curve.<\/p>\n<p>His hand tapping the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>His voice complaining about tourists.<\/p>\n<p>The gate appeared ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Open.<\/p>\n<p>I slowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI locked that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s car pulled around us.<\/p>\n<p>Officers entered first.<\/p>\n<p>No one inside the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>No cars.<\/p>\n<p>No obvious disturbance.<\/p>\n<p>Then Toby went to the shed.<\/p>\n<p>The floorboard had been lifted.<\/p>\n<p>The bait box was open.<\/p>\n<p>The spare key was gone.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been here.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the cabin, papers lay on the dining table.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh papers.<\/p>\n<p>Survey maps.<\/p>\n<p>Development drawings.<\/p>\n<p>A property assembly plan.<\/p>\n<p>Our cabin parcel shaded blue.<\/p>\n<p>The stolen rear acreage shaded yellow.<\/p>\n<p>Together they formed one large development site.<\/p>\n<p>At the top:<\/p>\n<p>ARDEN SHORES \u2014 118 RESIDENTIAL UNITS \/ PRIVATE MARINA.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Leon\u2019s lake transformed into boxes and roads.<\/p>\n<p>Then Toby pointed toward the signature block.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An owner-consent form lay beneath the map.<\/p>\n<p>My name appeared at the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Another forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>But this document had been signed by hand.<\/p>\n<p>The ink was fresh.<\/p>\n<p>And beside it was a witness signature.<\/p>\n<p>Elliot Crane.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz touched the page through gloves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow recent?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been inside my cabin only hours before us.<\/p>\n<p>And unlike the forged digital paperwork, this time we had the name of a living witness who was currently missing.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31849\">Click here to continue reading: PART 24: Fresh Signatures at the Cabin Proved the Scheme Was Still Moving, and Toby Found the Camera Leon Installed Years Before Anyone Knew We Needed It<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harold listened to Barbara\u2019s last message three times.
