Martin almost left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are they now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlight continued to Nassau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz asked, \u201cAny onward movement?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price handed her another sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had obtained partial call records from Martin\u2019s phone.<\/p>\n<p>The night before he disappeared, Martin called one person repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>Not Voss.<\/p>\n<p>Not Grant.<\/p>\n<p>Not Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>Harold.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>Harold frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t call me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price turned the sheet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat extension?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Price read it.<\/p>\n<p>Harold\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat extension was disconnected years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold looked toward the archive room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara Kern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dead office manager.<\/p>\n<p>Price nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone reactivated her voicemail box two months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy call a dead woman\u2019s extension?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold stood slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Barbara kept recordings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat recordings?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternal messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared toward the archive shelves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Martin thought Voss had restored Barbara\u2019s old system access\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then hurried into the archive room.<\/p>\n<p>We followed.<\/p>\n<p>Dust hung in the air.<\/p>\n<p>Boxes lined metal shelves.<\/p>\n<p>Harold found one labeled ADMIN 2014\u20132015.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were backup drives.<\/p>\n<p>He held one up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara archived voicemail weekly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we read it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith old software.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An hour later, the recovered mailbox opened.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of messages.<\/p>\n<p>Most meaningless.<\/p>\n<p>Then one from November 14, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Two days before Leon died.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara, call me before you process anything from Daniel. He has copies he should not have. Do not tell Harold yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another message.<\/p>\n<p>Same day.<\/p>\n<p>Voss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara, Martin authorized access. Ignore his earlier message. He\u2019s confused about what we discussed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then Barbara\u2019s own recorded note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke with Martin. He denies authorizing Daniel. Daniel claims Martin did. Something is wrong. I\u2019m printing the logs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went silent.<\/p>\n<p>The logs.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the same access logs Evelyn later found.<\/p>\n<p>Then one final voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>November 15.<\/p>\n<p>Martin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbara, destroy the printout.
