He knew mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Sherry and Vivian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Voss controlled all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twelve years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot continuously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat changed recently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe road project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same answer Grant had given.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the access-road proposal became likely, the cabin value multiplied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Voss revived the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did he expect?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold pointed toward the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo-point-four million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what the spreadsheet says?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me he wanted five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFive million?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a property worth around nine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s face went gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe road isn\u2019t the only development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA utility corridor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant had never mentioned that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cValue?\u201d Ortiz asked.<\/p>\n<p>Martin hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf approvals happen together?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFifteen million.
