mentioned it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven-point-eight million.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Not five.<\/p>\n<p>Not four-point-six.<\/p>\n<p>Seven-point-eight million dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Voss had told Sherry and Vivian the property was selling for $4.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>The paperwork sent to me showed $3.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>The actual developer was apparently prepared to pay $7.8 million.<\/p>\n<p>Layers inside layers.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone stealing from everyone.<\/p>\n<p>Toby whispered, \u201cGrant knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince last week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe confronted Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The day before the birthday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Grant wouldn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why did he bring Leon\u2019s letter to Harold today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s breathing became uneven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf Voss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Voss threaten?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Sherry answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Grant that if anyone interfered with the sale, he would make sure the police saw who had signed the original financing documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz looked sharply at Harold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat financing documents?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry began crying again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Toby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My son went completely still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never signed anything,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Another forged signature.<\/p>\n<p>But this time the forgery had apparently been used to finance the company positioned to acquire my cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Toby leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho signed my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSherry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in a voice barely louder than a whisper, she answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige made a broken sound.<\/p>\n<p>Toby stepped away from the table.<\/p>\n<p>The brother she had defended.<\/p>\n<p>The man named in their children\u2019s estate plan.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had arrived carrying Leon\u2019s warning letter and presenting himself as someone trying to stop the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Grant had not come to Harold because his conscience suddenly woke up.<\/p>\n<p>He had come because Voss had leverage over him.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz was already calling Detective Bell.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the documents spread across my kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>The missing birthday chair had seemed cruel.<\/p>\n<p>The $27,300 charge had seemed outrageous.<\/p>\n<p>Now both looked almost small.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them was a plan that had taken years to build, millions of dollars to motivate, and forged the names of nearly everyone Leon had tried to protect.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere between Sherry\u2019s confession and Grant\u2019s disappearance, the people who created that plan had begun turning on one another.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31838\">Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Grant\u2019s Forged Signature Put Him Inside the Scheme, but the Developer\u2019s Records Showed He Was Never Supposed to Keep Control of It<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Detective Ortiz treated the purchase offer differently from everything that came before it.
