Mom paid thirty-eight thousand dollars for a birthday she wasn’t even attending…”

Harold’s warning returned to me.

Money can do strange things to people who believe they are entitled to it.

I finished the thought.

“You could call me irresponsible.”

Sherry shook her head.

“That is insane.”

“And if I canceled it?”

Toby looked at the statement.

“Hostile when family members attempt to assist her.”

Paige covered her mouth.

I felt cold despite the warm room.

The party had been a trap either way.

A financial event large enough to become evidence.

And someone had already written the narrative before I chose how to respond.

I folded the page carefully.

“This one comes with us.”

Sherry stepped forward.

“You’re stealing.”

“No.”

I held up my phone.

“I’m photographing it.”

I took the picture.

Then placed the original back on the table exactly where Toby had found it.

For once, Sherry had nothing to say.

We walked toward the door.

I went first.

Toby followed.

Paige stopped behind us.

I turned.

She was looking at her mother.

“I have one question.”

Sherry’s face was stiff.

“What?”

“Did you know I was going to be asked to sign that?”

My skin prickled.

Toby froze.

I turned back toward Paige.

“What do you mean?”

Her eyes remained on Sherry.

“Aunt Vivian told me last week that there might be paperwork after the birthday.”

Sherry whispered, “Paige.”

“She said it would protect everyone.”

Toby stared at his wife.

“And you didn’t tell me?”

“I didn’t know what it was.”

“When were you supposed to sign it?”

Paige finally looked at him.

“Monday.”

Three days away.

“What paperwork?” I asked.

Paige swallowed.

“She said it was a family statement.”

I looked toward the draft on the dining table.

The statement describing me as confused and financially reckless.

The statement someone hoped my daughter-in-law would sign.

Sherry closed her eyes.

And in that moment, there was no longer any reasonable explanation left.

<a
