You found out this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>And somehow hearing it from her made the truth sharper.<\/p>\n<p>I barely understood Leon\u2019s arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry appeared to understand them better than I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy were you trying to replace Harold?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Her face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I lifted the photocopied trust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe note says otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt proves whoever wrote it knew there was a trustee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby looked down at the papers again.<\/p>\n<p>Then he pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d Sherry asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhotographing everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He started taking pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Each camera click sounded startlingly loud in the room.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry moved toward him.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea how much damage you\u2019re about to cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Vivian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her jaw flexed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr Paige?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That did it.<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Only for an instant.<\/p>\n<p>But Toby saw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does Paige know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word came from behind us.<\/p>\n<p>We all turned.<\/p>\n<p>Paige stood in the foyer.<\/p>\n<p>I had not heard the front door open.<\/p>\n<p>Her face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Toby.<\/p>\n<p>Then at her mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you find?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby\u2019s shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry spoke before she could.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t answer him while he\u2019s like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m supposed to be calm?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re supposed to be rational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking at secret files about my dead father\u2019s estate in your dining room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige walked toward us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know about all of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He caught the word instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you knew about some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother said, \u201cPaige.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d Toby held up one hand. \u201cDon\u2019t help her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Mom had been asking questions about the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow long?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Toby stared at his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew your mother was investigating my mother\u2019s property for a year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she was trying to understand what would happen eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my mother died?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word burst out of her.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Paige pressed both hands to her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s what this is about,\u201d Toby said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother said there were financial decisions we needed to understand before the children got older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat decisions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cabin. Your inheritance. Whether we should plan around it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face became almost expressionless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlan around my mother\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an ugly way to phrase ordinary estate planning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrdinary estate planning involves your own estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou are Paige\u2019s husband. What affects you affects her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat belongs to my mother does not belong to Paige.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby slammed his palm on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop saying eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chandelier trembled.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone went silent.<\/p>\n<p>He stared at Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father has been dead twelve years. My mother is alive. She is standing right here. Stop talking about her life like it is an inconvenient waiting period before the rest of us get paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n<p>Paige began crying.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to comfort her.<\/p>\n<p>A week earlier, I probably would have.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I looked at the papers again.<\/p>\n<p>One page lay half hidden beneath the appraisal.<\/p>\n<p>I pulled it free.<\/p>\n<p>It was an email.<\/p>\n<p>The sender address had been blacked out on the printed copy.<\/p>\n<p>The recipient was Vivian.<\/p>\n<p>The date was three months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Only one paragraph had been printed.<\/p>\n<p>Before any action can be taken, H.M. must be removed or declared unable to serve. The beneficiary can then petition for access depending on financial necessity.<\/p>\n<p>H.M.<\/p>\n<p>Harold Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>My hands went cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He came beside me.<\/p>\n<p>I handed him the page.<\/p>\n<p>Paige saw it.<\/p>\n<p>Her crying stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry did not move.<\/p>\n<p>Toby read aloud softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore any action can be taken, H.M. must be removed or declared unable to serve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat action?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat action?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is Vivian\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou keep saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why was it in your house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe brought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s control cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you canceled the party!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words rang through the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does the party have to do with the trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry realized too late what she had said.<\/p>\n<p>Toby whispered, \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige looked at her mother with horror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>And in that second, I understood something I had not considered.<\/p>\n<p>The birthday charges had not merely been extravagance.<\/p>\n<p>They were connected.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, the party, the attempted property transaction, and the documents on this table were pieces of the same plan.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped closer to Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was supposed to happen after I paid for that party?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opened her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just connected them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI misspoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Harold.<\/p>\n<p>I answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m at Sherry\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went silent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was not where you said you were going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then Harold\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked around the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just pulled the transaction details on the eighteen-five.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a purchase.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA legal retainer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I gripped the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe firm listed on the payment has filed petitions involving trusts and guardianships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did not understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of guardianships?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harold spoke carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdult guardianships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>My eyes found Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>She was watching me.<\/p>\n<p>And from the look on her face, I knew she already understood exactly what Harold had just told me.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31831\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Eighteen-Thousand-Dollar Payment Wasn\u2019t for Property at All, and Harold Revealed Why Leon Built the Trust to Resist a Family Petition<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I turned onto Sherry\u2019s street too fast and had to brake hard at the corner.
