Put on your shoes. Wash the cup. Turn off the stove. Give your hands something familiar while your mind catches up.

So I made coffee.

Then I sat down.

The folder smelled faintly of paper and the cedar lining from the upstairs cabinet.

The first document was a deed.

I recognized the address immediately.

The lake property.

Leon and I had bought it when Toby was six. Calling it an estate would have made Leon laugh. It was several wooded acres, a weather-beaten cabin, a dock that needed repairing every third summer, and enough mosquitoes to carry away a small dog.

Leon adored it.

So did Toby.

Some of my clearest memories of them belonged to that place: Leon showing our son how to bait a hook; Toby falling into the lake fully dressed; the two of them burning marshmallows until they became black lumps and insisting that was how they preferred them.

After Leon died, I could not visit for almost three years.

I considered selling it twice.

Something always stopped me.

I turned the deed over.

Behind it was another document.

Then bank records.

Then correspondence from an attorney.

The attorney’s name stirred a distant memory.

Harold Mercer.

Leon had known Harold through business. They had been friends long before I met either of them. Harold attended our wedding, Toby’s christening, and Leon’s funeral.

I had not spoken to him in years.

I kept reading.

Then I found a title that meant nothing to me.

Huitt Family Preservation Trust.

I read it again.

The trust had been established in September 2014.

Two months before Leon died.

My throat tightened.

I had known Leon was reorganizing financial matters near the end. He told me he was simplifying things so I would not have to deal with paperwork while grieving.

Apparently he had done something far more complicated.

The trust held the lake property.

An investment account.

And our house.

I pushed my chair back.

“No.”

I read the page again.

The house where I was sitting belonged legally to the trust.

Not to me individually.

A note had been clipped behind the document.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Leon wrote in blocky letters that leaned slightly right, as though every sentence were hurrying toward somewhere important.

Mara—

If you have opened this, then something happened that made you question what belongs to our family.

I covered my mouth.

For twelve years, I had avoided this folder because opening it felt like violating a private room inside our marriage.

Now Leon was speaking directly to me from it.

The note explained that the trust was not designed to keep property from me. It was designed to protect me and Toby from pressure, reckless decisions, and anyone attempting to gain control of family assets after Leon was gone.

I frowned.

Pressure from whom?

I turned the page.

Toby was the eventual beneficiary.

But distribution was conditional.

Education.

Age.

Marriage provisions.

Financial safeguards.

Then I found the clause that made me stop breathing normally.

The principal could not be distributed while the beneficiary was acting under financial coercion or substantial direction from another person seeking access to trust property.

I read it three times.

Leon had not simply left Toby an inheritance.

He had built a barrier around it.

Why?

Another document identified the trustee.

Harold Mercer.

A telephone number appeared underneath.

Before calling, I searched the remaining pages.

Printed emails.

Property appraisals.

Insurance information.

Old bank statements.

Then correspondence dated shortly before Leon’s death.

One letter from Harold began with a concern involving Toby.

I almost dropped it.

Toby had been twelve.

I read further.

Harold described questions Toby had apparently asked about the lake property and whether he would someday own it. Nothing about that seemed strange. Children asked questions.

But Harold believed someone was prompting them.

The next page contained Leon’s handwritten notes.

One name appeared twice.

Sherry Lamb.

I stared at it.

“No.”

At the time, Sherry was not family.

Toby and Paige had known each other as teenagers, but they were children. Their relationship was years away from marriage.

Why would Paige’s mother have appeared in Leon’s private financial records?

I kept reading.

According to Leon’s notes, Sherry had asked him several times about the lake property.

Who owned it?

Was it paid off?

Would Toby inherit it?

Did Leon carry life insurance?

Those questions might have been dismissed as nosiness if they had come once.

Leon had documented a pattern.

Then I found a sentence written across the margin.

If Sherry ever becomes involved in family finances, call Harold.

I sat motionless.

The kitchen clock ticked behind me.

Yesterday, Sherry had been involved in my finances.

Very involved.

She had arranged an extravagant birthday party that somebody expected me to finance.

And this morning, an $18,500 transaction had been attempted in connection with property inside Leon’s trust.

I picked up my phone.

The number for Harold was still current.

He answered after two rings.

“Mercer.”

My throat tightened.

“Harold?”

Silence.

“Yes?”

“This is Mara Huitt.”

Another silence followed, longer this time.

“Mara?”

“Yes.”

“My God.
