When he frowned, a small line appeared between his eyebrows in precisely the place Leon\u2019s had.<\/p>\n<p>He walked toward the entrance quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he noticed Sherry, Mr. Caldwell, the waiting guests, and the dark ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry reached him first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother canceled the party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby stopped.<\/p>\n<p>His face turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt seventy-two pairs of eyes finding us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI canceled nothing that belonged to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened. \u201cThe ballroom is closed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the venue called me about charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat charges?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry interrupted. \u201cToby, we can discuss this later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her. \u201cWhat charges?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Huitt, there are additional event expenses attached to your mother\u2019s contract that require her authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-seven thousand three hundred dollars for the expanded venue package.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Then at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can\u2019t be right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also two outside vendor invoices,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat invoices?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFlowers and champagne.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked through the doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe flowers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix thousand eight hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face lost color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the champagne?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour thousand two hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby rubbed his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me this was taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gestured vaguely toward me.<\/p>\n<p>That small motion changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>Toby followed it.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened my purse and handed him the original contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI booked twenty-four people. Fixed menu. Private dining room. No band. No open bar. No elaborate flowers. No champagne tower.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read the first page.<\/p>\n<p>I turned it over for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I required written approval for additional charges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He found the clause.<\/p>\n<p>His mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t approve any of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry said, \u201cShe offered to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twenty-four people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did it become seventy-two?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry crossed her arms. \u201cPeople wanted to celebrate you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was meant to be a surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho invited my boss?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy clients?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaige\u2019s cousins from Connecticut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve met them twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was changing.<\/p>\n<p>The anger directed at me when he arrived was thinning into bewilderment.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell opened his binder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral modifications were submitted by Mrs. Vivian Lamb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAunt Vivian?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian stood near the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>She had apparently been hoping the crowd would hide her.<\/p>\n<p>It did not.<\/p>\n<p>Toby walked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you change Mom\u2019s booking?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivian glanced at Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was helping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whose permission?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought everybody agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes moved again.<\/p>\n<p>Toward Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry snapped, \u201cStop looking at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The parking lot became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Toby noticed.<\/p>\n<p>So did Paige, who had just emerged from another car.<\/p>\n<p>She came toward us slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s happening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby turned to his wife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know your aunt was charging this party to Mom\u2019s account?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Toby heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaige.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Mom and Aunt Vivian were organizing things. I didn\u2019t know how they were paying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou removed Mom from the planning chat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>Guilt passed across her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother said the conversations were becoming tense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked them not to charge additional expenses to my card,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Paige swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed they knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>I had seen that expression when he was ten and broke a neighbor\u2019s window. It was the moment before denial became impossible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom,\u201d he said, \u201cwhy didn\u2019t you call me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to talk about the guest list twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked confused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me there wasn\u2019t a seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face changed.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry immediately stepped in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby, you made that decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI explained the seating problem and you agreed your mother should stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told somebody important had arrived unexpectedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian needed a seat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVivian was already invited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered something Mr. Caldwell had said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have the seating list?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went inside.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry watched him leave.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers had tightened around her handbag.<\/p>\n<p>That detail stayed with me.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell returned carrying several pages.<\/p>\n<p>He handed them to Toby.<\/p>\n<p>Toby scanned the names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeventy-two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then his eyes moved downward.<\/p>\n<p>He frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stepped beside him.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the final page.<\/p>\n<p>My name did not appear anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Not moved.<\/p>\n<p>Not handwritten.<\/p>\n<p>Gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was this list submitted?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree days ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Toby looked at Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew three days ago there wasn\u2019t a seat for Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou called me tonight and made it sound like somebody showed up unexpectedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice was quiet now.<\/p>\n<p>That worried Sherry more than shouting would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou planned to exclude her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI planned a smooth evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith her credit card.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned toward Paige.<\/p>\n<p>She looked devastated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot until this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He absorbed that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew before I called Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you didn\u2019t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew what would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d get angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed once without humor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paige wiped at one eye.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother said it would be easier if Mara didn\u2019t come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEasier for who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>A man near the entrance stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Mr. Dalton, Toby\u2019s employer.<\/p>\n<p>He cleared his throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think perhaps we should leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry looked appalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dinner can still happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Dalton glanced through the glass doors at the dark room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe anyone here is hungry enough for this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several people murmured agreement.<\/p>\n<p>He shook Toby\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHappy birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Huitt, I\u2019m sorry you were put in this position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One by one, guests began leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Cars started.<\/p>\n<p>Headlights moved across the building.<\/p>\n<p>Within minutes, the party that had expanded from twenty-four to seventy-two collapsed back down to the handful of people who had caused the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Vivian left without saying goodbye.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry remained.<\/p>\n<p>Paige stood beside her.<\/p>\n<p>Toby came toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I come home with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question pierced somewhere deep.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I wanted him to choose me over Paige.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>But I had spent years watching my son drift farther from the life we had shared, telling myself grown children were supposed to drift.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe they were.<\/p>\n<p>But there was a difference between growing away from a parent and allowing someone else to push that parent aside.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can come,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby, don\u2019t be ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to talk to my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can talk tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked directly at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m Paige\u2019s mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut being Paige\u2019s mother doesn\u2019t give you the right to erase mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Toby walked with me toward my car.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway there, he stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>The blunt answer hurt him.<\/p>\n<p>I could see that.<\/p>\n<p>But I had spent too many years softening truths until nobody could feel their edges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should\u2019ve asked questions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should\u2019ve listened when you said the party was getting out of hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stared at the pavement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying to keep everybody happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>I touched his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t trying to hurt me, Toby. But you got so used to assuming I\u2019d understand that you stopped noticing what you were asking me to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgot who was always there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did I do, then?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stopped looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hugged me.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then we went home.<\/p>\n<p>We sat at my kitchen table until almost midnight with sandwiches neither of us finished. Toby told me he had let Paige and Sherry manage the birthday because work had been difficult. He had assumed the expense was modest because nobody told him otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>I did not ask what \u201cdifficult\u201d meant.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:38, Paige called.<\/p>\n<p>He declined it.<\/p>\n<p>I told him not to punish his wife by disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need one night,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He slept in his old bedroom.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I woke shortly after seven.<\/p>\n<p>Toby had already left.<\/p>\n<p>A note beside the coffeemaker said he needed to speak with Paige and would call later.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:46, I opened my laptop.<\/p>\n<p>An email from my bank sat at the top of the inbox.<\/p>\n<p>The subject line warned of attempted charges.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>Six transactions had been attempted against accounts connected to my financial profile.<\/p>\n<p>Some corresponded to the birthday vendors.<\/p>\n<p>One did not.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen thousand five hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>The description referred to a deposit on Huitt family estate property.<\/p>\n<p>My skin went cold.<\/p>\n<p>There were only two pieces of property that description could possibly mean.<\/p>\n<p>My house.<\/p>\n<p>Or the lake cabin.<\/p>\n<p>I had discussed neither with Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>Paige knew about the cabin, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Toby had spent half his childhood there.<\/p>\n<p>But there was something else.<\/p>\n<p>A memory I had not touched in years.<\/p>\n<p>Leon in the hospital during his final weeks, thinner than I had ever seen him, asking me whether the blue folder was still locked away.<\/p>\n<p>I had told him yes.<\/p>\n<p>He had squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep it safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he had said something I never fully understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t let them touch it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time I assumed medication and exhaustion had made his thoughts wander.<\/p>\n<p>Now, twelve years later, somebody had tried to use my financial information in connection with family property.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs, behind winter coats I had not worn in years, stood a narrow locked cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>The key remained inside an old ceramic bowl.<\/p>\n<p>I carried it upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>The lock resisted before giving way with a dry metallic click.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a faded blue folder.<\/p>\n<p>I had not opened it since Leon died.<\/p>\n<p>I lifted it from the cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Dust marked the tips of my fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Then I carried my dead husband\u2019s secret downstairs and placed it beside the bank notice.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever had started at Toby\u2019s birthday was not finished.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time, I wondered whether Leon had seen it coming twelve years before any of us did.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31812\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Inside My Husband\u2019s Blue Folder Was a Trust I Never Knew Existed and a Warning About Someone Already Inside Our Family<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toby stepped out of his car wearing the navy suit we had chosen together two weeks earlier, and the sight of him almost undid me.
