I knew because I had made it enough times during the planning. Leon used to tease me for timing familiar routes. He said I approached ordinary errands like military operations. I told him somebody in our marriage needed to know when dinner would actually be served.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking about him steadied me.<\/p>\n<p>Leon had disliked confrontations, but he disliked dishonesty more. He could forgive almost anything if a person admitted it plainly. What he could not tolerate was someone rearranging facts until the injured person became responsible for the injury.<\/p>\n<p>By the time I turned onto the long drive leading to Larks Hall, the evening sky had turned the color of bruised peaches.<\/p>\n<p>Cars filled the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Far more than twenty-four guests had arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Men in jackets and women in cocktail dresses stood near the entrance, checking phones and speaking in small, confused groups. Through the tall windows I could see staff moving inside, but the Grand Hall itself remained dark.<\/p>\n<p>I parked near the side entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Before I reached the building, Mr. Caldwell came through the doors.<\/p>\n<p>He was perhaps sixty, silver-haired, narrow-shouldered, and carrying a black binder pressed against his ribs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Huitt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression showed relief mixed with dread.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat exactly happened after our call?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward the guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe suspended the expanded services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuspended?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe additional food, alcohol, entertainment, and upgraded room arrangements were all linked to charges requiring your authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd since I didn\u2019t authorize them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot provide them under your account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded toward the crowd. \u201cDo they know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about my original dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat reservation was effectively absorbed when the event was moved to the Grand Hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout my approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened slightly. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I let that sit between us.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell opened his binder. \u201cI want to apologize. This should have been caught sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho made the changes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He showed me several printed modification requests.<\/p>\n<p>The name appearing repeatedly was Vivian Lamb.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n<p>I knew Vivian, although not well. She was the kind of woman who could spend fifteen minutes explaining why a napkin should be folded a certain way and somehow make you feel uncivilized for having used napkins normally your entire life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had my contract information?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears she was given a copy of the original booking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t establish that from these records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One modification had increased the guest count to forty-eight.<\/p>\n<p>Another raised it to sixty.<\/p>\n<p>A third took it to seventy-two.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the Grand Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The band.<\/p>\n<p>The open bar.<\/p>\n<p>The seafood.<\/p>\n<p>The champagne.<\/p>\n<p>Each addition was treated as though it belonged under the original booking.<\/p>\n<p>Under my name.<\/p>\n<p>Under my card.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t anyone call me earlier?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell looked genuinely uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeveral members of our events staff believed Mrs. Lamb was acting as your coordinator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I designate her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she say I had?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hesitation answered before he did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe represented that the family had approved the changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same as me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A woman called Mr. Caldwell\u2019s name from the entrance.<\/p>\n<p>We both turned.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry was walking toward us.<\/p>\n<p>She wore a metallic gold jacket over a black dress, her hair arranged in the smooth helmet she favored for formal occasions. Even from thirty feet away I could see the irritation in her posture.<\/p>\n<p>When she recognized me, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed only briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she smiled.<\/p>\n<p>It was the smile she used when witnesses were present.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara. I thought you weren\u2019t coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed precisely where she intended them.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell shifted his weight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry looked at my purse. \u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe venue called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes flicked toward Mr. Caldwell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA financial authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her smile remained, but the muscles around it stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure that can be handled tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara, Toby\u2019s guests are standing outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve already embarrassed him enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I studied her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow have I embarrassed him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou canceled his party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI canceled charges I never approved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few guests nearby had begun listening.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry lowered her voice. \u201cThis is not the place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen where was the place? The planning chat I was removed from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was Paige\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas removing my chair also Paige\u2019s decision?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Sherry looked genuinely surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby told you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him I would handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence gave me more information than she realized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told my son not to invite me to the dinner I organized?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him there was a seating problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith seventy-two chairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were last-minute additions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd somehow the person who made the original reservation became the easiest person to remove.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry exhaled through her nose. \u201cYou\u2019re making this emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course I am. He\u2019s my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he\u2019s Paige\u2019s husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t aware those roles competed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes hardened.<\/p>\n<p>For years, Sherry and I had maintained the sort of politeness that exists when two people understand perfectly well that they dislike each other but share people they love.<\/p>\n<p>I had tried.<\/p>\n<p>After Leon died, I had been grateful Toby had Paige. She was patient with him during the worst months. Sherry brought casseroles. She arranged errands. She invited Toby to their home when mine became too heavy with memories.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere along the way, help had become authority.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry decided where holidays happened.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry decided which relatives mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry decided how Toby and Paige should spend vacations.<\/p>\n<p>I told myself it was harmless because Toby rarely objected.<\/p>\n<p>Then I stopped being invited to certain dinners.<\/p>\n<p>Then certain holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Then planning conversations.<\/p>\n<p>Now my own money was expected to remain at the table after I had been removed from it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho gave Vivian my contract?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho told her she could increase the guest count?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d have to ask Vivian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho decided I wasn\u2019t attending?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer came too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said you told him there was a seating problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him the facts. He made the decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s on his way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he hasn\u2019t even arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you called him fifteen minutes before his birthday dinner to tell him his mother needed to stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the simplest solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was.<\/p>\n<p>Not an accident.<\/p>\n<p>Not confusion.<\/p>\n<p>A solution.<\/p>\n<p>I had become a logistical inconvenience in an event I had created for my son.<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the glass doors at the dark Grand Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Tables were already arranged inside. Gold charger plates caught the light from the lobby. Tall floral structures stood in the center of each table. Near the far wall, rows of champagne glasses rose in a glittering pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>None of it looked like Toby.<\/p>\n<p>He hated champagne.<\/p>\n<p>He disliked shellfish.<\/p>\n<p>And whenever Leon took him somewhere formal as a boy, Toby spent the evening loosening his tie and asking when they could go home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis party isn\u2019t for him,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry stared at me. \u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou made his birthday into something you wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deserves something impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe deserves to be known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you\u2019re the only person who knows him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I know he wouldn\u2019t order a raw bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Mr. Caldwell almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry did not.<\/p>\n<p>A car turned into the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>More guests.<\/p>\n<p>The absurdity of it finally settled over me. Seventy-two people had been invited to celebrate a man who originally wanted fewer than two dozen.<\/p>\n<p>My phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Toby.<\/p>\n<p>Where are you?<\/p>\n<p>I typed: At Larks Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Three dots appeared almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then: Why?<\/p>\n<p>I looked up at Sherry.<\/p>\n<p>Because the venue needed me here.<\/p>\n<p>His response took longer.<\/p>\n<p>What did they need?<\/p>\n<p>I typed four words.<\/p>\n<p>Authorization for your party.<\/p>\n<p>His reply came quickly.<\/p>\n<p>I thought that was handled.<\/p>\n<p>By whom?<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>Then another message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry said everything was paid.<\/p>\n<p>I raised my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry was watching me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Toby the party was paid for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her expression barely changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him not to worry about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whose money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara, stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith whose money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several conversations nearby faded.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry glanced toward the guests.<\/p>\n<p>Then she stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou offered to pay for his birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI offered to pay for the dinner I booked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re his mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what exactly is the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The casualness of the question astonished me.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven thousand three hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>That was more than some people earned in months.<\/p>\n<p>More than Leon and I had spent on our first car.<\/p>\n<p>More than Toby\u2019s entire first year of college had cost us.<\/p>\n<p>And Sherry was speaking as though refusing to surrender it made me cheap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem,\u201d I said, \u201cis that nobody asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you really want to ruin Toby\u2019s fortieth birthday over money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mr. Caldwell\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped aside, spoke briefly, and returned with an expression that made my stomach tighten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He opened the binder again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found two additional vendor authorizations linked to the event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry\u2019s head turned sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat vendors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne is floral.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix thousand eight hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the towering arrangements visible through the windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the other?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChampagne. Four thousand two hundred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The numbers settled between us.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-seven thousand three hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Six thousand eight hundred.<\/p>\n<p>Four thousand two hundred.<\/p>\n<p>More than thirty-eight thousand dollars in planned charges attached to an event where I had no chair.<\/p>\n<p>Sherry said, \u201cThose were supposed to be included.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluded in what?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>She did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Caldwell looked down at the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Huitt, until we determine who had authority to approve these additions, I recommend keeping every disputed service suspended.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sherry stepped toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I met her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know exactly what I\u2019m doing.
