didn’t you?”

“Because once the investment succeeded, it made more sense to treat the Mercer trust as participating capital.”

“Did Grandpa agree?”

“He was dead.”

The answer was so cold that I stared at him.

Dad immediately looked away.

“That sounded worse than I yet.

Maybe not ever in the form he wanted.

“You should go.”

He nodded.

At the door, he stopped.

“I do love you.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

His face changed.

Perhaps he expected me to say it back.

I could not.

Knowing he loved me did not solve anything.

That was another lesson.

Love could coexist with control.

Love could coexist with betrayal.

Love did not excuse either.

Dad left.

Rachel waited until the door closed.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

It felt good to answer without softening it.

“No, I’m not.”

She nodded.

We sat quietly for several minutes.

Then my phone rang.

Holly’s school.

My heart jumped.

I answered immediately.

There had been no emergency.

Holly is.”

I almost smiled.

Then Holly asked, “Do you love Dad?”

Children always found the question adults avoided.

“Yes.”

“Then why aren’t we going home?”

“Because loving someone doesn’t mean you have to let them keep hurting you.”

She stared through the windshield.

“Do you love Grandpa?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Are you mad at him?”

“Very.”

She thought about that.

“Can you be both?”

“Yes.”

The answer came easily.

Maybe because I finally believed it.

That evening, Holly drew another house.

This one had only four bedrooms.

Nora no longer had one.

Neither did Grant.

She drew a small guest room downstairs.

“Who’s that for?”

She
