Grandpa had owned manufacturing businesses before selling most of them.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Frank work for Mercer Industrial?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered this time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was chief financial officer for three years before Dad sold it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room became still.<\/p>\n<p>My father had managed finances for my grandfather before the trust existed.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked, \u201cWho handled the sale?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There it was again.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had been present at the beginning.<\/p>\n<p>Not merely after Grandpa died.<\/p>\n<p>Martin\u2019s voice came through the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I found the source of the original trust funding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all turned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProceeds from the sale of Mercer Industrial assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom covered her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInitial funding appears to have been approximately twelve million dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Twelve million.<\/p>\n<p>The hidden account in my name was not Dad\u2019s generosity.<\/p>\n<p>It was part of an inheritance originating with my grandfather.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much is left?\u201d Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>Martin paused.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s going to take time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s face had changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought Dad created the wealth,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, my brother looked as betrayed as I felt.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had apparently given Daniel more information than me.<\/p>\n<p>But not the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked Martin to trace the original trust against the current structures.<\/p>\n<p>Then Daniel said something quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Dad\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginal trust documents.
