I didn\u2019t say you should come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood in Rachel\u2019s conference room with everyone watching me. Martin had turned his laptop around, but the transfer from my account remained visible on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you move two-point-one million dollars three days ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant stopped breathing for a second.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the account in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour credentials authorized it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t used those credentials in months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho has them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>She mouthed, Ask about Celeste.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Celeste have them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant\u2019s silence lasted too long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe helped me set up remote access when I started doing transfers for Frank.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened. \u201cYou gave your mistress credentials connected to accounts in my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know your account was one of them then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat distinction is not helping you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutside the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat tells me nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to protect you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed once. \u201cEvery man in my life has apparently been protecting me by hiding things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, please listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You listen. You sent me a photograph of Peter Hall\u2019s files. You told me you know where Celeste is. Now you\u2019re refusing to say where. Either you\u2019re helping us or you\u2019re still helping yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he gave me an address.<\/p>\n<p>Martin typed it into his computer.<\/p>\n<p>A map appeared.<\/p>\n<p>The location was almost ninety minutes away, in a rural area beyond the suburbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d I asked Grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeleste said it belonged to someone she trusted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin began searching property records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she there now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was an hour ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel held out her hand for the phone. I put Grant on speaker instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant,\u201d she said, \u201cthis is Rachel Morgan. Do not remove, alter, or destroy anything in that storage unit. Do you understand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the original Peter Hall records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel\u2019s expression hardened. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Celeste told me to take them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cBring them directly to my office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Frank knows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A chill moved through the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does he know?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I met Celeste.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. Somebody followed me from the storage facility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin stopped typing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescribe the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack SUV. I lost it twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you get a plate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel asked, \u201cAre you in immediate danger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing about this is useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Grant sounded less guilty than genuinely frightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Celeste now?\u201d I asked again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t she come with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe refused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said somebody had to stay with the rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rest of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin and Rachel exchanged a look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many records?\u201d Rachel asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaper?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaper, drives, old backup disks. Things Peter copied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Celeste kept all of this for years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant gave a tired laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she was waiting for the day Frank tried to destroy her too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>Martin turned his laptop toward us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found the property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho owns it?\u201d Rachel asked.<\/p>\n<p>He read the screen twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudith Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cabin is owned by a trust naming you as beneficiary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t own a cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad had done it again.<\/p>\n<p>Another property.<\/p>\n<p>Another structure.<\/p>\n<p>Another family member who did not know what existed in their own name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>Martin showed her the map.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand rose to her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We all looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you didn\u2019t own it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t. But Frank used to take Daniel there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Daniel was in college. Hunting trips. Weekends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce. Years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin enlarged the property record.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trust acquired it seventeen years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head. \u201cNobody told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the address again.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste had chosen a hiding place connected to my mother.<\/p>\n<p>Not accidentally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes Dad know she\u2019s there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cIf he remembers the property, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel immediately told Grant not to return to the cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Then she made another call.<\/p>\n<p>I listened to only half of it before understanding she was contacting law enforcement through someone she knew.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s financial records were one thing.<\/p>\n<p>A frightened witness, disputed millions, stolen credentials, and a possible pursuit had changed the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not driving there ourselves,\u201d Rachel said when she finished.<\/p>\n<p>I had not realized until then that I was holding my car keys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd possibly someone looking for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe may have moved money from my account.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is another reason you don\u2019t confront her without knowing the circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom touched my arm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to wait?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I want to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that property is in my name, I\u2019m done being told where I\u2019m allowed to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel closed her eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two are remarkably similar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under different circumstances, I might have laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Martin arranged for copies of the property documents while Rachel continued making calls. Grant agreed to drive directly to a location Rachel chose and hand over Peter Hall\u2019s boxes.<\/p>\n<p>He arrived forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>When he walked into the conference room carrying the first box, Mom stood and moved away from him.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJudith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>He carried in all three boxes.<\/p>\n<p>On the top one, Peter Hall\u2019s name was written in faded marker.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel photographed the sealed boxes before anyone opened them.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the first were financial statements, handwritten notes, and copies of transfers dating back more than a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The second contained correspondence.<\/p>\n<p>The third held drives and labeled backup media.<\/p>\n<p>Martin put on gloves before touching anything.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him lift a folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laid it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>The label read:<\/p>\n<p>BENNETT FAMILY STRUCTURES.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were diagrams that looked disturbingly similar to the chart Martin had created.<\/p>\n<p>Trusts.<\/p>\n<p>Companies.<\/p>\n<p>Properties.<\/p>\n<p>Accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>My name.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Even my children\u2019s names appeared on one handwritten sheet.<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are my kids here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>Beside Holly, Mason, and Eli were abbreviations and dates.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel read silently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese appear to be proposed future trust beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad create accounts for them too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Grant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad ever talk about using the children\u2019s names?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant shook his head. \u201cNot with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat down hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>In another folder, Peter had written a memorandum to himself.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel read it while Martin photographed each page.<\/p>\n<p>Peter described transfers between companies that seemed designed to shift liabilities away from one entity while moving assets elsewhere. He repeatedly questioned whether beneficial owners understood their names were being used.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence was underlined twice:<\/p>\n<p>Family members appear unaware of extent of beneficial designations.<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Hall had known.<\/p>\n<p>Years before Grant\u2019s first loan.<\/p>\n<p>Years before Celeste slept with my husband.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had noticed that my father was constructing a financial world around us while leaving us ignorant of our roles inside it.<\/p>\n<p>The office phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel answered.<\/p>\n<p>Her expression changed as she listened.<\/p>\n<p>Then she wrote something down.<\/p>\n<p>When she hung up, she looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAuthorities reached the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCeleste is alive. She\u2019s there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief came before anger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs she okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we see her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s speaking with investigators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant leaned forward. \u201cDid she say anything about the money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid they find the records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found a substantial amount of material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s hidden world was beginning to exist outside his control.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rachel\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time she listened for less than a minute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked when she ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was another person at the cabin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was not inside when officers arrived. She was found nearby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s voice came out almost soundless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrank?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had known exactly where the cabin was.<\/p>\n<p>He had reached Celeste before we did.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he doing there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas she hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo indication of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why was he nearby?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel gave him a hard look. \u201cSit down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant did.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at the conference table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to talk to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Rachel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd right now there are investigators determining why he was at a property connected to you where a missing employee was hiding with disputed company records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>For once, she accepted the instruction.<\/p>\n<p>An hour later, Rachel received permission to speak briefly with Celeste by phone.<\/p>\n<p>She put the call on speaker only after Celeste agreed.<\/p>\n<p>The voice that came through was calm, low, and exhausted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Emily there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words infuriated me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor which part?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked down.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste answered quietly. \u201cAll of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou slept with my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou helped him move money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou accessed accounts in my name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you move the two-point-one million?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour access made it possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho moved it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you choose Grant?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence stretched.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Celeste said, \u201cBecause he was already inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInside what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father\u2019s financial system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrant says you wanted access to the family accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Peter spent years trying to prove your father was using family trusts and related companies to hide where money originated and where liabilities ended up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you seduce Grant to get access?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grant flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Celeste did not answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word seemed to empty the room.<\/p>\n<p>Grant stared at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what I told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face went white.<\/p>\n<p>I should have felt satisfaction.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>Watching someone discover that an affair had been built partly on manipulation did not repair the person betrayed by the affair.<\/p>\n<p>It only added another layer of ugliness.<\/p>\n<p>Grant whispered, \u201cWas any of it real?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste\u2019s voice changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of it became real.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cAnd the six hundred forty thousand?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI moved it because I needed leverage and because Frank was preparing to make Grant responsible for transactions that came from Frank\u2019s instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou stole it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s in an account investigators can recover.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rachel leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Laurent, did you move the two-point-one million from the account identifying Emily as beneficial owner?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have a suspicion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the speaker.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy brother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Frank gave him access years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Daniel telling me I could ruin all of us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Daniel know what Dad was doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore than you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much more?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to be afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone was already in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t call him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if Celeste is right, we need records before he knows we\u2019re looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at my brother\u2019s name on my screen.<\/p>\n<p>Then Celeste said something that made everyone forget Daniel for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily, there\u2019s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father didn\u2019t create the account in your name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen who did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Celeste answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour grandfather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s father had been dead for eleven years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe original trust was his.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Celeste said. \u201cFrank took control of it after he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered the account creation date.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The year my grandfather
