her.

She had been upstairs while a stranger moved through our home.

The stolen car suddenly mattered less than the fact that someone had stood beneath my sleeping daughter’s very still.

The detective wrote the statement down.

This was no opportunistic car theft.

The intruder knew Lily.

He knew our house.

He knew where I kept the spare key.

He knew about Mr. Harris’s camera.

And he had carried objects meant to point investigators toward members of my family.

An officer searching beneath Lily’s bed found something else.

A small silver compass keychain.

I recognized it instantly.

I had given it to Evan years earlier.

My stomach it.

Less than half an hour later, Nolan received another call.

They had located the Civic behind an abandoned warehouse several miles away.

The front end was badly damaged.

No driver.

No obvious blood.

But the driver’s seat had been pushed almost as far back as it could go.

Lily couldn’t have reached the pedals from that position.

Neither could I.

Whoever drove it was tall.

Then investigators recovered torn navy fabric from inside the car.

A silver button remained attached.

I remembered seeing an identical button on Evan’s jacket.

The case appeared to be pointing toward him with almost theatrical neatness.

That was exactly what bothered Daniel.

“If Evan wanted to frame Lily,” he said after the officers left, “why leave evidence that immediately redirects suspicion toward possibility is becoming harder to ignore.”

My parents’ house sat less than fifty yards from the crash site.

My mother claimed my father had identified Lily.

Someone had used my mother’s ring.

Someone had apparently used Evan’s jacket and keychain.

Every path led back to Oakridge Lane.

“We need to speak to my father.”

Daniel agreed.

When we arrived, the wreck site remained cordoned off.

Broken glass glittered near the base of an oak tree opposite my parents’ front window.

The location felt deliberate.

Whoever drove the Civic had chosen a place where my parents would almost certainly hear the impact.

My mother opened the door.

Her face changed when she saw Daniel.

“Why did you bring him?”

“Where’s Dad?”

“Resting.”

“I’m speaking to him.”

She blocked the doorway for only a second.

Then she stepped aside.

My father was in his study.

He looked older than he had three weeks earlier.

I put the facts in front of him one at a time.

The camera.

The bracelet.

The ring.

The gas-station footage.

The them.

The third was a younger man I didn’t recognize.

Yet something about his hand caught my attention.

A scar.

Long and pale across the back of the left
