They were knocking with the flat, deliberate rhythm of someone who expected the door to open. Through the narrow window beside it, I saw two uniformed officers beneath the porch light.<\/p>\n<p>My first thought was Lily.<\/p>\n<p>She was fifteen, asleep upstairs, and the sight of police at that hour made every ordinary parental fear arrive at once. I unlocked the deadbolt before I had even found my slippers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Collins?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The older officer glanced past me into the house. \u201cIs Lily Collins your daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the edge of the door. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to determine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second officer held a small notebook. Neither man looked hurried. Somehow that frightened me more. If there had been an accident at school or a hospital emergency, I expected urgency. Instead they had the careful expressions of people who had already heard a version of events and had come to see whether mine matched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Lily?\u201d the first officer asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUpstairs. Sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two men exchanged a glance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould you wake her, please?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t move. \u201cNot until you tell me why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The older officer introduced himself as Detective Nolan, then asked whether I owned a silver Honda Civic. I said yes. Technically, I explained, I had bought it for Lily two weeks earlier, but she wasn\u2019t allowed to drive it alone. She had her learner\u2019s permit and practiced only with me beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is the vehicle now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the driveway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan\u2019s eyes shifted toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, ma\u2019am,\u201d he said. \u201cIt isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a second, I genuinely thought he had mistaken my address.<\/p>\n<p>I crossed the living room and pulled the curtain aside.<\/p>\n<p>The driveway was empty.<\/p>\n<p>The patch of concrete where the Civic had been parked the night before was dark with moisture. My own SUV sat in the garage, but Lily\u2019s silver car was gone.<\/p>\n<p>I turned back toward the officers. \u201cIt was there when I went to bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA little before midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your daughter have access to the keys?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe regular key is in my purse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny spare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hesitated. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan wrote something down. \u201cMrs. Collins, a silver Honda registered to you was involved in a single-vehicle collision shortly after midnight on Oakridge Lane.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oakridge.<\/p>\n<p>My parents lived there.<\/p>\n<p>The coincidence hit me before the rest of his sentence did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas anyone hurt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t found the driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean you haven\u2019t found the driver?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe vehicle struck a tree. Whoever was driving left before officers arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the staircase. Lily\u2019s bedroom was at the end of the hall above us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan studied me. \u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter wasn\u2019t driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have witnesses who reported seeing a young female leave the vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have the wrong girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne witness identified Lily by name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That silenced me.<\/p>\n<p>Not a description. Not a teenage girl with brown hair. Lily.<\/p>\n<p>I folded my arms, partly from anger and partly because I had suddenly begun to shake. \u201cWho identified her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t discuss witness information yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came into my house accusing my child of crashing a car she isn\u2019t legally allowed to drive, and you can\u2019t tell me who supposedly saw her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t accused her of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are you here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression remained controlled. \u201cBecause we need to speak with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A floorboard creaked overhead.<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stood halfway down the staircase wearing gray pajama pants and an oversized school sweatshirt. Her hair was tangled around one cheek. She had clearly just awakened.<\/p>\n<p>She looked from me to the uniforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went to her immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan asked, \u201cLily, do you know where your car is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>She looked through the front window.<\/p>\n<p>Then she ran the remaining steps, crossed the room and stared at the empty driveway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched her face carefully.<\/p>\n<p>There was confusion there. Then fear.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing about it looked rehearsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police say it crashed near Grandma and Grandpa\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned sharply. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter midnight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The detective asked when she had gone to sleep. Lily said around eleven. Had she left the house afterward? No. Had she given anyone the key? No. Had she driven to Oakridge Lane? Absolutely not.<\/p>\n<p>Then he asked a question that changed her expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you own a white braided bracelet?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She automatically touched her right wrist.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing was there.<\/p>\n<p>Her face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had it yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan\u2019s voice remained quiet. \u201cWhere did you last see it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know. At school, maybe. Or here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does the bracelet have to do with the crash?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>The officers exchanged another glance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA witness reported seeing one on the driver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily whispered, \u201cMom, I didn\u2019t take the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said it before examining the evidence, before hearing another question, before allowing myself to calculate how impossible the situation looked.<\/p>\n<p>Her shoulders dropped slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan asked whether we had security cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Only the doorbell camera, I told him, and it faced the porch rather than the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Mr. Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Our neighbor across the street had installed a camera after someone stole tools from his garage that summer. I had teased him about the number of alerts it sent whenever a squirrel crossed his lawn.<\/p>\n<p>His camera faced directly toward our house.<\/p>\n<p>I looked through the window at the dark brick bungalow opposite ours.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Nolan noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy neighbor has a camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes it cover your driveway?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since entering my house, the detective\u2019s posture changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t contact him yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to preserve the recording properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just told my fifteen-year-old daughter that somebody saw her abandoning a crashed car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Detective, you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily\u2019s fingers slipped into mine.<\/p>\n<p>I felt how cold they were.<\/p>\n<p>The officers remained another twenty minutes. Before leaving, Detective Nolan gave me his card and told me not to let Lily leave the house until he called.<\/p>\n<p>I shut the door behind them and stood there listening to the deadbolt click.<\/p>\n<p>Lily was silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cMom, I swear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes were wet now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I checked on you last night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She blinked.<\/p>\n<p>At approximately 11:40, I had walked upstairs to turn off the hallway light. Lily\u2019s bedroom door had been partly open. I remembered seeing her asleep sideways across the mattress, one foot outside the blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Her phone had been charging on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>Her sneakers had been beside the bed.<\/p>\n<p>And her window had been closed.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered something else.<\/p>\n<p>As I had crossed the downstairs hallway afterward, I had glanced through the front window.<\/p>\n<p>The silver Civic had still been sitting in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had taken it after that.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who apparently wore Lily\u2019s bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>And someone at the crash scene had known enough about my daughter to identify her by name.<\/p>\n<p>I went into the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I opened the junk drawer where I kept the spare key.<\/p>\n<p>Batteries rolled against a screwdriver. There were rubber bands, coupons, old receipts and a roll of tape.<\/p>\n<p>I pushed them aside.<\/p>\n<p>The red plastic tag attached to the Civic\u2019s spare key should have been underneath.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the drawer twice.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third time.<\/p>\n<p>Lily stood behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe spare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it gone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The house suddenly felt unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>Someone knew where we kept that key.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had either entered while we were sleeping or taken it earlier and waited.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the drawer without touching anything else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo upstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face tightened. \u201cDon\u2019t send me away when this is about me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was right, but she was still my child, and every instinct I had was telling me that the missing car was only the visible piece of something larger.<\/p>\n<p>Before I could answer, someone knocked again.<\/p>\n<p>Lily flinched.<\/p>\n<p>This time I looked through the glass before opening.<\/p>\n<p>It was Mr. Harris.<\/p>\n<p>He stood on the porch in a brown jacket with his phone in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>When I opened the door, he didn\u2019t greet me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re investigating Lily\u2019s car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something in his voice made me stare at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Harris lifted his phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy camera caught it leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lily stepped closer behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaught who?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at her, then back at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you both need to see this.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31700\">Click here to continue reading: PART 2: Our Neighbor\u2019s Midnight Recording Proved Lily Was Home, but One Detail Suggested Someone Had Carefully Prepared to Make Her Look Guilty<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The pounding began at 6:17 in the morning, hard enough to rattle the framed photographs in our entryway.
